Your wheel should tighten enough to make the needle, bobbin, etc to operate. if you loosen the knob the needle, etc shouldn't move. to adjust keep pressure on the knob counterclockwise and loosen the screw. at a point the knob will slide over a hump. you may now tighten the screw and try to use the bobbin wind and sew functons. you may need to do this adjustment a couple of times.

IT PROBABLY IS THREADED INCORRECTLY. GO SLOWLY BY THE DIAPHRAGM AND MAKE SURE IT IS THREADED CORRECTLY. ALSO MAKE SURE SPOOL PIN HOLDERS ARE IN PLACE THAT HELPS TO GUIDE THE THREAD CORRECTLY.

SOURCE: can't tighten clutch on Kenmore zig zag sewing machine.

The clutch has fallen off the shaft. Remove the very small screw in the clutch release screw to remove the clutch release. Place the clutch(round thing with ears on it) back on the shaft with the center ears pointing towards the outside. Put the clutch release screw back on. Tighten it to make sure it works
properly. Put the small screw back in the clutch release screw and test it again. If it will not tighten or release properly, remove the clutch ,rotate it180 degrees and try it again.This should solve your problem.

Thread test
Test your thread quality to start, thread your machine and LIFT the presser foot (this opens the tension disks). Pull your top thread straight back. If you feel no tension no mater how much thread you pull, your thread is good. If that your machine passes that test, then let me know, we can go to step 2. If not, try different spool of thread, same test until you get a smooth pull (tip: always check your thread this way when you thread your machine)
Step 2:
Pull on your threaded bobbin thread while it’s in the machine. Does it pull smooth and even? If so, go to step 3. If not, try a new bobbin (bobbins get bent or distorted if wound too tight).
Clean thoroughly in the hook and bobbin case area and oil 1-2 drop is all.
Thread knotting on the bobbin can be a lot of things but here's some guidance:
Tension:
If the thread is loose on the bottom of the fabric, it's actually the top thread is too loose. Think of 2 little elves playing tug of war in your machine, one on toip and one underneath. If you have loops on bottom, the top needs to pull harder (tighten top tension)
Jamming bobbin case:
If it is damaged from turning out of place once, it could have rough spots on it that makes the thread hang on it, and keeps making it turn over and over. Use a finger nail board (fine sanding) and smoothall rough spots. Then reset the bobbin case taking care to put the notch in the bobbin case in alignment with the proper spot in the machine (basically 5 o’clock) when looking at the round area where the bobbin case goes.

The tensions must match ie. top tension =bottom tension. If the material is not sewn together tightly, that means the tensions are mismatched. Sewing machines will sew whenever the top and bottom tensions are equal (be it very tight or very loose).

We usually advise the customer to not touch the bobbin case tension. When that is not changed, all tension adjustments can be made from the top tension above the needle.

It appears that one of the two tensions (top or bottom) is much tighter then the other. I would reset the tensions to how they came, if you are unfamiliar with sewing machines this may take a little bit of experimenting until you get it back to a standard quality stitch.

The other option would be bring it to a sewing tech. A good mechanic should be able to adjust the machine and your tensions to your fabric (and recommend needle size for your thread/materials) in about an hour.

Why is the bobbin thread looping and catching on my sewing machine? The stitches are uneven, too.


Hi Sylvia,
Your problem is an un-matched tension of the threads. You mentioned doing an adjustment recently. That is the problem area.
If your bobbin thread develops loops on the top side of the fabric, you need to tighten the bobbin tension.
There is no easy method for this and you will have to do it slowly -
tighten, test, re-tighten, test.... until you get a near perfect stitch.
I haven't come across a portable device specifically designed to set thread tensions.

The Yamata sewing machine isn't making any stitches. When a press the peddle the machine makes a spinning sound and nothing happens. If I keep working with it and adjust the controls sometimes it will sew...


Hold the wheel at the end of the sewing machine, and then tighten the hub that is in the middle of that wheel. It is purposely designed to tighten and loosen, so you can wind bobbins up with thread without running all the parts of the sewing machine when you do so.

Bobbin tension too loose


take off the plug open the small cover inder the base where needle sinks you will notice a round bobbin with a latch lift the latch and pull out the bobbin you will notice a very small screw on the side of bobbin tighten it haf turn fir the bobbin and check if or or adjust accordingly.
when you sew the threads on both side should be even and balanced.
if the top sew is loose you need to tighten the bobbin and if the lower side is loose you need to tighten the upper mnow from where the thread comes out and goes through the horse.hope you find this helpful

Thread on bobbin looping


Sounds like you need to adjust the bobbin casing tension (tighten the little screw on the bobbin case). I would also oil the face of the bobbin casing so that the thread wont snag or tug on it at all.

You can call different fabric shops to see if they have a repairman that does house calls.

The machine may need a total tune-up and this requires shop time.

In the mean time - set the top tension at 4 and then thread the machine with the presser foot up.

For the bobbin, use a contrasting thread for this test.

If this is a rotary (vertical with metal bobbin case), insert the bobbin into the case so the thread is feeding clockwise and through the guides on the side and of the case.

Take hold of the bobbin thread tail and if it falls like a yo-you, you need to tighten the screw on the side of the bobbin case so the bobbin thread does not pull out while being held in said position.

Make tiny adjustments to the right.

If the bobbin thread is so tight that the top thread is pulling to the underside, loosen the screw ....tiny increments to the left.

Once you have the bobbin tension set, do a test stitch and the top and bottom stitches should be balanced.

Too much bobbin thread on top, loosen the top tension - lower number.

Too much top thread on the bottom, tighten the top tension - higher number.

Cant put thread on bobbin


Hold the large wheel at the end of the machine firmly while you unloosen the smaller wheel inside. this will free up the sewing mechanism. tighten back up after bobbin is wound.

Machine No. K1831(256) No.28 how do you set up the stop motion wheel to wind bobbins. It either winds bobbins whilst sewing or just free wheels. I think there must be a way of adjusting this action....

Threading the bobbin


Threading the bobbin - winding thread onto the bobbin.

Position the new empty bobbin onto the vertical bobbin rod next to the end wheel. Click the rod to the right to engage drive. Hold the outer end wheel with left hand, and rotate the inner wheel anticlockwise by about a 1/2 turn (it stops) this removes drive from the foot and needle mechanism.

From a spool of thread on the top, thread to a loop/post on the left on the top. Then back to the bobbin you want to wind. Thread through a hole from the inside-out. Hold the thread vertically above the bobbin while you depress the footswitch to start winding. Let go when it's turned a few times.

Move bobbin shaft left, and tighten end wheel after winding enough.

Fitting bobbin-

Move footplate towards you, insert bobbin in hole so that bobbin rotates anticlockwise when thread is pulled, then pull thread into the fine notch towards you. After this position thread away from you, and slide the footplate closed.

To start / load thread. Hold the end 3" of the thread through the needle behind the sewing foot. hand crank towards you to sew first stitch in air. This should retrieve the lower thread - which you can catch with a handy pair of scissors. Then pull both threads rearwards - ready to sew.
