PC Power Issue

Hi I am having some power issues with my PC. The motherboard light is sold green so I know that I am getting power. However when I turn it off then turn it back on it wont start up at all. I then check all my external cables and it then come back on. I am not sure if its a PSU issue or something else. Thanks Rob

If it only comes on when you move the cables but not if you don't then one of the cable connections (pins) are loose or internally broken. Unplug it and check each cable/pin for any loose connections, bent pins etc.

Okay so the PSU power cables could be faulty or do you mean the Motherboard and Peripherals connections?

PC Power Issue

It does sound like a psu problem, if you are comfortable with opening your pc then (remember to use anti static wrist band rubber matting etc) and remove the psu and give it a good dusting (as the dust does collect in on the fan and inside the unit itself (please be careful when working with this unit as it is a power unit and can be dangerous) put unit once cleaned back into the pc making sure you reconnect everything carefully. (if you are not sure rather take it to a professional as you can do some serious damage to your mother board and or peripherals. but this should give a few more boot ups ultimately you could replace it with a new PSU.

Amber light flashing on switching on the pc why?

HI,

A blinking amber light means that there is a problem with the power supply or the motherboard. I know that could be a number of things. Perhaps you could give some additional information.

1) Does the green light come on on the motherboard?
2) Do any/all of the fans work? Power supply or computer cooling.
3) Do you get any other lights? CD/DVD player?

You may have to get someone to see if your power supply outputs are all good.

I hope that gives you some starting points.

Thanks for using Fixya.

The power supply may be going out. Go to the Dell website, select support, enter your service tag number and find your symptom to determine the problem. The lights in the back will help you isolate the issue by cross referencing it to the lights that are lit and not lit.

I have an HP desktop, this morning it will not power on but the light in the back is green. please help...

OK one of Three things, If the light on back is green and blinking it sounds like you have a power supply issue,

You might want to check that the power button on the front is still connected to the switch behind the button, Do this by removing the side cover and looking at the wire, I have one that always pops off and its the same computer,

Third you may have a motherboard issue, One of the easiest ways is to look at the mother board and you will see little caps that look like cans of beans, If they are bulging up or broken then you have a motherboard issue.

I hope its just the button let me know if its not we will figure something out together for you

It will not start even after I replaced the power

Before anything else, open your case and make sure all power and data cables going to motherboard, disk drives, etc are firmly seated, and remove and re-install memory sticks in the same locations. Sometimes temperature changes inside the PC can cause these connections to loosen. If that doesn't fix it, do you hear the noise of the cooling fans coming on? If you do, check your monitor for a green light. If you get a green light on the monitor and fans are powered up and running and you get nothing else it could be a hard drive issue. Try booting from CD in that case. If fans come on briefly and then shut off, or fans stay on and you have no green monitor light, this could indicate an issue with your processor or motherboard.

HI there!

A amber light power button means that the
distribution of the power is not working properly,

And as you have said the battery won't charge anymore,

Usually what fixes that problem of yours is a BIOS
update but from what i see you cannot fix it with a BIOS update anymore.

And on what they said yes your gonna need to replace motherboard because it's not detecting the charger anymore if you can still access BIOS setup go to battery info you will see that the ac adapter is unknow.

So for the fix of your problem there you'll need to get a motherboard for your computer.

Hope this helps!

Green light flashing on back of unit near power cord also green light flashing on motherboard near power supply plug in.

I would suggest trying to replace the power supply. If that does not fix the issue, i would need to hear more about the computer.

The power switch/button may have a polarity issue. Remove the power cable from the back of the PC, then swap the power switch connector on the motherboard 180 degrees (put the connector with the two different color wires back in the opposite way it was on).

Amber Light and fan running

1st thing, disconnect everything but keyboard mouse and monitor, see if anything changes.

If the issue persists, ensure that all power and card connections for the motherboard are tight and secure. If you've added RAM or other parts, remove them. Reseat the RAM in the motherboard that came from Dell.

If none of those ideas have any effect on the issue, replace the motherboard.
