Make model and serial number is about all that you need. If possible, take it to a reputable gunsmith. He should be able to tell you everything you want to know about it.

What is the age and the caliber of this weapon?

Impossible to guess with no details John.

Calibre is stamped on the barrel. To get age, you need make, model and serial number.

If it is an antique, flintlock for instance, take it to a gunsmith.

Unknown age..?

1977

Now, a dirty little secret.

The first 2 number are the year code.
For newer Marlins (as yours is, because of how many digits are in the serial number), the way it works is subtract the first 2 numbers (23, in your case) from 100 for the last 2 digits of the year of manufacturer.

Your example:

100-23=77 i.e. 1977
