Question about Computers & Internet
From what you described, this sounds like a defective sound card. I would suggest bringing it into a professional to get it checked out. However, I could be wrong. If you can get it checked for free and then have it repaired for money, that would be my suggestion.

Before going to any shops, here is a suggestion that can't hurt anything.
Go to the Control Panel and click on Sounds and Audio Devices. On the Volume tab at the bottom, you will see "Speaker Settings". Click on the Advanced button. Change that setting to "Stereo headphones". You should hear the sound only through the headphones then.

This appears to be a problem with the soundcard or device. The mic/headphone/speakers are all usually associated with the sound card. you may have had a virus attack or problems with the items drivers. Check the device has no problems:- My Computer/Control Panel/System/Device Manager ( Yellow Exclamation ) denotes Problem. Alternatively, is to disable the Mic Input Via the sound cards control Panel.
Thankyou for using Fixya.

I have a 700m, so I'm real familiar with the system. I see one of 2 possibilities. The headphone jack has a switch that disables the on-board speakers, if that is stuck or broken, then the jack/switch must be replaced. (Big hassle)
The other is easier to troubleshoot, then connection from the speakers to the MB goes through the Right hinge cover. Take the hinge cover off, check for broken wires (I has one, ***** to splice too)
