How do I change the clutch drum on a stihlHS81R hedgtrimmer?

The engine runs OK but the blade does not move forward and backwards. I suspect that the drive gear has sheared off the clutch drum.

Clutch makes whineing noise. Bike does not move in gear with clutch pulled in when not running.

The gears won't mesh when the engine isn't running unless you rock the bike backwards and forwards with the bike off its stand.

As for whining, low oil is the first thing that comes to mind followed by bad bearings, and bent or worn clutch plates.

How do I change the clutch drum on my stihl hs81R hedge cutter?

hi all, I see a few people are in need of this question been resolved so heres the answer.

1st, of all you need to take off the gear box plate using a torx 27 tool to remove the 6 torx bolts.

2nd, you will need to remove the internal spur gear and connecting rods possible the full blade.

3rd, remove the external circlip that holds the drive pinion gear in place.

4th, you will need to remove the air filter cover

5th, next is the 3 torx bolts holding the gearbox casing to the engine 1 is at the back wich can be accessed through the ring that covers the rear anti vibration springs. the other 2 are either side of the casing sunk down a little bit. hopefully these can be easily located.

6th, next is the pull start housing/ top casing.

7th, at this point you should be able to carefully lift the engine out of the lower casing and get access to the clutch drum.

8th from the gear box side carefully tap the drive gear out of the bearing.

9th, give the gear box a good clean out to remove any old oil and any metal filings that may be hanging around.

finally re fitting is pretty much the reversal of this step by step although 1 thing to take into consideration is when putting the new clutch drum in be sure to have something softer than the clutch drum to tap it back into place using the centre of the clutch drum to avoid any possible damage on refiiting.

1 final thing, good luck. and don't forget to refill with grease

1992 Evinrude Motor will start but when put in forward or reverse the propeller will not move

If it runs OK leave the carbs alone- You need to start with the final drive and prop condition. Put it in gear and step on the prop blade to try and turn it. (sometimes you need to try and force it backward from the gear its in due to the engineering of the clutch dogs.

The results of this can tell you a lot. First if the prop spins freely- you have a broken shear pin in the propeller (older units),

if it spins smoothly but with drag- you may have damaged the rubber hub of the prop. Mark the inside part of the prop (the hub) and the blade section and try again- check the marks to see if the prop is wrecked (if they don't move from one another your OK.

Next drain the lower oil and look for metal, and water contamination (looks like mayonnaise) If full of metal, the gears and clutch dog are trashed,

Last and worst of the catastrophic is if the splines in the crank and drive shaft are broke. The water pump will not work if this is the problem.

The easier stuff is a stretched or broken control system. Easy test is -if on a cable/ release the cable and manually shift it. If it shifts you work on the control box and cables if it is not shifting check the connector to the lower unit. If early style evinrude, it is hiding behind one or 2 covers on the stb side mid way down the intermediate housing. In side will be a brass duble bolted connector. Shift again and watch the connector. If it isn't moving. the problem is under the power hed, if it is moving the problem is in the clutch yoke or arm that moves it. (Common mistake when the pivot pin/phillips screw ahead of the drain screw is mistakenly removed as a drain vent.)

How much forward and backward slop should there be on the mainshaft 1st gear when i turn it back then forward on the clutch side

When you've got the clutch off and you're turning the mainshaft by hand backwards and forwards, it feels like a lot. I've never measured it but it seems like it's about a half turn or so. What you are doing when you turn the mainshaft backwards and forwards with the transmission in gear is you're moving the dogs of the first gear clutch dog in the transmission back and forth in the slots that it the dogs fit into. They have to have enough room to slide into the slots but when it the engine is running. the dogs go all the way to the backside and stop. Unless you're having a problem with the transmission, don't worry about this back and forward movement.

Good Luck

Not sure, but i think the electronic clutch is not engaging when i push the control levers forward or backwards. the engine and the mower deck both run, but the mower will not move

The electric clutch is to power the blades/mower deck. There is a belt that drives the hydrostatic pumps to power the wheels. Make sure the Parking brake is OFF. Could be a belt, spring, idler pulley.

Ariens Yard Tractor 935 Series - initially drives, then stops moving as it gets warm

Is it a hydrostatic tranmission? If so, sounds like the fluid might be old or not the right viscosity. Recommend changing the trans fluid, and use recommended viscosity of fluid.
