Is there any way to stop freezing in Windows 8.1?

My wife has a Toshiba C55 Sattelite laptop, that has Windows 8.1. While it performs on average....there is a lot of freezing while she's online. Can anyone give me any reasons why?

How do you mean, "freezes"? Completely locks up? Browser stops working? Touchpad won't work? There are many complaint sites listing touchpad problems on that Toshiba, resolvable via a BIOS update. However, if that's not the case ...

1. Could just be the browser. Download Opera, it's one of the lightest browsers -- from a resource standpoint -- and if your system still freezes when using it, then it's likely not a software function (personally, I love Firefox, but it's been buggy as all get out, lately -- it's caused freezing on my main desktop.) Opera download is here: http://www.opera.com/download

2. Could, rather, be a memory issue. Download Memtest and have it run your RAM through the paces. This is not a short process, but it will be thorough. You will first have to burn an ISO to a CD / DVD. Memtest download is here: http://www.memtest86.com/download.htm

3. If any connection at all to the network freezes your computer, you may also be owned by one or more trojans. Massive trojans detecting a network connection and running applications can completely bog down or lock your computer. I personally witnessed a case of someone having over 1000 trojans sending out -- inappropriate e-mails -- from an old Jewish couple's pc ... took me a week to fix it. Perform a thorough anti-virus scan, preferably from a recovery CD that boots at startup and bypasses your OS from the get go.

My guess would be your WIFI network. If the signal is weak or there is a lot of interference, then you will get occasional "freezes" while online, especially playing videos.

To test the theory, connect the laptop directly to the modem with a network cable and have your wife go online and see if she still has the issues.

If the issues go away, then you will need to upgrade your WIFI and/or add additional WIFI routers/extenders.

This is not an easy task. If it were, there would be no point in the password in the first place. Laptops vary by manufacturer on how you can do this and not everything works for every machine. Here is a link to an article giving some things you can do and what you need to do if they fail to work. Good luck!

There are two ways to it; you can disable SATA mode from your BIOS Setup if it supports it and secondly, you would have to slip-stream sata drivers for your toshiba with a Windows XP2 Using nLite software. Google nLite and download the software
