Is it cost effective to replace draft inducer blower on 22 year old furnace?

Brant Serial Number: 0592A03516 Model: 394HAD024050 AAJA My 22 yr old furnace works great but makes an ungodly noise for a few seconds before kicking on (heat only - not A/C). Sounds like a tuba player! Should I spend money on repair or just replace the furnace?

Depends on the cost to repair. Probably a 22 year old furnace is not very efficient also. Take every thing into consideration.
If it still works it may work for a while but you don't want a break down in the middle of winter.

Estimated repair is $300-400. Estimated replacement is $1800-$2000. But you're right. I bet the furnace isn't energy efficient. Maybe I should bite the bullet. If I could repair it myself, it might be worth the 'band aid' but unfortunately, I'm not mechanically inclined.

Also, I turned the heat off & the fan on. No noise. Is that the norm? And the noise is intermittent -- doesn't happen every single time the heat kicks on. But when it does, it sure is loud.

I need to replace the draft inducer Fasco A190, P/N C341445P01. It's $400! Is there a less expensive alternative?

This is not a "tool" question, you should have posted to Air Conditioners.

eBay doesn't list any right now, last one went for $50.

Is it the control board or the fan or both that you need to replace? Might be able to find the control board separate if you have that number.

Best bet if you have the time, is eBay, Craigslist or a local heat and air repair guy who might have an old one he can sell you.

If you are lucky:
Ten-year internal functional parts limited warranty is effective on units installed after October 1, 2001 and manufactured January 1, 2000 or after. Earlier installations have two-year parts warranty

There should be a gasket between the mounting flange of the inducer motor and the furnace. If you do not have that you can use a small bead of blue or red silicone caulking to seal it. Hope this helps you. Thanks

Sounds like some one needs a new induce draft fan relay, if relay is located on the main control board you have to replace control board, follow wires from inducer motor and you will find the relay. I could help you more if i knew model # and serial # of the furnace, Good luck.

The fan motor went out and the furnace is not even 5 years old.

I have an Amana High Efficiency furnace that I purchased 5 years ago this past October (2009). My furnace started making a horrible noise last night and then stopped working. The repair person, told me my draft inducer motor needed replaced, and showed me where the plastic fan blade inside of the inducer was "chewed up." Of course my first question is, "How can a 5 year old furnace need such a costly repair already?" The only answer I received is that it will cost me close to $500.00 to have the situation remedied (service call, parts, labor). I started looking around on the internet today, and discovered that high efficiency furnace inducer motors are usually encased in plastic and the motor fan blades are made of plastic rather than metal like the lower efficiency models. Turns out that these plastic blades over time can't withstand the high heat generated and in time (they estimate 3-4 years) break. The damage to the blades causes an imbalance in the way they spin, which in turn, generates the resulting problem of a damaged draft inducer motor. Appears this is a design flaw. Yeah! I'll say. I spent $3100.00 for a brand new furnace and 5 years later I'm paying another $500.00 and apparently can look forward to doing the same in 3-5 more years! Maybe this answers in part your question?

Gas furnace is constantly blowing cold air

An indoor blower running when it is not supposed to usually indicates an overheat condition. I would guess that it has been cycling on and off for some time and finally caused the high limit to stick and not auto reset. if you tap it sometimes they reset. the real problem is that it has been overheating from lack of airflow, over sized unit, not enough return air, too many closed registers, dirty filter, dirty squirrel cage blower and or air conditioner a-coil. If you get it started again sit and watch the unit run the flames should come on and stay on for the entire heating cycle, not going on and off.
I wish I could help you more but it is difficult without seeing the problem myself. Good luck! this should get you started!
