Question about Craftsman YT 4000 42" Briggs Stratton 24 hp Gas Powered Riding Lawn Tract

1 Answer

The lawn tractor hit a post and now the left front wheel is out of alignment. How can I make it aligned?

I have already replaced the LH spindle, LH draglink, & LH link cross. Everything else looks good, but the left wheel still is not aligned. There is no alignment adjustment, so I am looking for other things to look for. The front axle looks OK, the steering shaft looks straight, and the gear sector plate looks OK.

The steering tie bar (goes from left to right steering brackets and makes the wheels steer together) should be straight. if it's bent, that is your problem.

You can find your manual at:
Parts are available at
You won't find detailed instructions there, but there are parts diagrams that will help you determine what to remove first. I can't imagine why you'd need to replace this whole assembly, but the diagrams should be helpful.

How do I adjust front wheels one wheel goes way off center

before you change anything, lift the whole front end off the ground and check the wheel bearings and the suspension bushings for slop. you cannot align it if there is slop in the system and those cheap
plastic wheel bearings are usually the culprit. if the bearings are bad, replace both sides and you can buy new front wheels at small engine repair shops, lowes, menards, DIY. if the knuckle bearings are bad, then a sears parts location or a small engine repair shop is the place to be. and from time to time an entire knuckle is bent from where a woman hit something with it.

if there is no slop, then acquire an owners manual from sears, google it, and there will be instructions on how to align. very simple lock nut on a threaded rod type of task. not rocket science.

Craftsman DLT 3000 Lawn Tractor, Model 917.273821. Two problems for which I'd appreciate any help: Problem 1. The front wheels are not aligned. The left front wheel cants out to the left so much so...

Problem 2 is probably a belt slipping or a pulley loose somewhere.Problem 1 the tie rod adjustable? If the tie rods are adjustable, put steering wheel where it's supposed to be when straight, then adjust tie rods so that each wheel is pointed straight ahead. There should be a lock nut that needs to be loosened, then turn the tie rod end in or out and tighten lock nut. Back to problem 2....if it isn't the belt or pulley, it may not be an easy fix.Sometimes over time, belts stretch and get loose, or a set screw in a pulley can work loose, and cause the pulley to slip on the shaft. If it is hydraulic, it might be low on fluid.. I don't know for sure as I am not a big fan of Craftsman lawn tractors. Good luck

Look under the front between the wheels at the tie rod that connects the two wheels. It is probably bent up and should be straight. If it's bent, remove it a straighten it.

Front wheels on craftsman lawn tractor are in two different directions after hitting fence. The one that hit the fence is in a 45 degree angle and the other is straight, how can I realign these.

It depends on if you just bent the tie rod (the rod that goes between the wheels) or if you bent the spindle on the wheel that hit. Look under the front and see if the tie rod is straight. If not, take it off and straightened it. If it is straight, you probably bent the wheel spindle. But also check the axle on the end that hit to see if it is twisted.
