Dell demension 4600 desktop... Here's the issue,

Dell demension 4600 desktop... Here's the issue, the bios isn't registering any HDD that I put in or the second disc drive. The computer had a nasty virus that wouldn't allow you to access any main windows programs and after trying everything else I had to take the HDD out of the computer to have it formatted and windows reinstalled. But since I had that done the bios won't read it anymore. It is also not reading the secondary disc drive..

This happen only due to hard disk "data cable" or "power cable" problem... please check your desktop internal data cable or power cable that is connect to your second drive....

Thanks

Testimonial: "I did that. The drawers open and close and the HDD has power but the bios just doesn't acknowledge they are there. I tried replacing the idea cable with another set from a computer that works and still get nothing. Also the bios doesn't have the option to return to default. I have turned all the options for drives on.. They say unknown device but when I save and exit the bios says nothing is in the ports that obviously have a drive in them. I even moved the drives around to see if it was just the one spot but it seems that it no longer wants to read any drive accept the dvdrom."

Thing is... Everything worked fine til it got virus. Only major change was taking HDD out to have it formatted. Now it doesn't register and neither does the second DVD drive

Thing is... Everything worked fine til it got virus. Only major change was taking HDD out to have it formatted. Now it doesn't register and neither does the second DVD drive. Took to geek squad at best buy before googling and trying everything I've seen online without changing any of the original components. Geek squad told me to buy a new computer.

you do not need to purchase new computer....just purchase new windows 8.1 disk and attach same harddisk as it was... format hard drive with new windows disk it will work fine...

Dimension 4600 dvd drive keeps opening

Try this first - open up the BIOS part of the system. To do this, shut the computer off; wait at least 10 seconds; turn the computer back on and then press F2 when the Dell logo appears. Press continually until the message Entering Setup appears. In the Boot Order section, remove the CD/DVD drive from the boot order by clicking on Disable from the drop-down menu. If this doesn't fix it, please resubmit your question

I can't boot up normal, safe mode, or to the cd-rom on my dell dimension 4600 desktop, i've set to boot to cd rom in bios, but still nothing

If you are trying to boot off an Windows Installation disc then you might have a problem. On some computer the CD-ROM drive won't be able to read the operating system disc.

The solution to this issue would be to put in a DVD drive and try to boot from that.

More details on the normal and safe mode boot attempts would be nice too. Are you getting a blue screen or is it just hanging up?

Maybe your cd cannot be read anymore by your CD drive.
be sure that the cd is cleaned and no crack traces on it.
Please try another a very new CD/DVD to see if the CD drive can read.

if read then, your cd is damage. but there is some CD drive that cannot read some cd disc. You should select maybe the cd rom compatibility.

Realtek ac'97 with xp pro

the reason is possibly because the 4600 does not have the Realtek sound chip or sound card, it is probably a soundblaster and that is why the pc crashes as the driver does not match the audio, see the below link for the correct drivers. http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/driverslist.aspx?c=us&l=en&s=gen&ServiceTag=&SystemID=DIM_P4_4600&os=WW1&osl=en&catid=&impid=
