You didn't say what brand or model it is but most gasoline powered edgers are 2-cycle and will need to have the proper 2 Cycle oil mixed in the appropriate ratio with the gas. Google the instructions for your model of edger or, if you still have the manual and just didn't check it first, look there.

My Craftsman 5.5 hp 14" rear tine tiller starts but doesn't run for long. It blows black smoke and quits. The gas is new and the oil is good.

Black smoke looks like it's burning too much oil. If it is a 2 stroke engine try a lower ratio of 2 stroke oil to gasoline mixture. Make sure you are using 2 stroke oil!
If it's a 4 stroke engine find out why and or how the oil is getting burned.

I need to find out gas to oil ratio on 6.5 hp craftsman lawn mowe

This info is available at any dealer or repair shop. I would recommend contacting them to be sure. The lead says mini-tiller but your question says lawn mower. The 6.5hp motors, as far as I've dealt with were 4 stroke which means no mixture, but check with a dealer or shop, they'll know.

Do I need oil in the gasoline on the 3 hp motor?

It should say in your manual if the engine is a 2-cycle or a 4-cycle. The 2-cycle would need oil in the fuel, the 4-cycle would not...Good luck...Lee
