SOURCE: Hi! I have a Hayward Pro pool/spa system with

This is tough cause I can't see the valve setup. I have to assume they are manual valves. Normal operation probably takes some water out of the pool and spa than puts it back into both. To heat the spa, set the intake valves(the ones in front of pump) to take water from only the spa. Set the jets(valve(s) on output side of filter) to send water back to only the spa. The pool will be out of the loop. Normal operation usually has water taken out of pool and spa than put back into both. Make sure to put more water back into spa than you take out, (Adjust valve)

SOURCE: pool-spa control problem

You will probally have to replace the air tube that runs from the spa to the equiptment. With time you will build up condensation in the tube and that will cause the problem you describe.

Installed new pump unit starts and runs for 15 minutes then trips breaker what should I check

When the pump nears the 15 minute mark, check the housing to determine whether it is running hot. Also listen for changes in pumping sounds as something may be causing restriction.

Who often should I backwash sandfilter

I would let it run for about a minute depending on how clogged it was. Our backwash drain is very visible so we can see when the dirty water has left the filter, usually about a minute or two.

Does not work at all

For information on getting your dolphin serviced please visit and select the dolphin button along the bottom of the site. Complete the questionnaire and we can proceed from there. I assume by check you have verified that there is the correct output voltage across pins 2 and 3 at the socket. The remaining items are the cable and the motor unit itself. Neither is considered a do-it-yourself repair item. Providing the units serial number can help with estimating any chance of warranty coverage as well as possible repair pricing prior to sending it in for repair. If you are not in the upper East coast / mid-West area, we can refer you to a service center in your part of the country.

Expected life time of Sta-Rite heater?

Thank you for posting your question here on

Overall heater life is often dictated more by the pool maintenance history and chemical usage than location. Generally speaking up here in the Midwest you can expect 12 - 15 years of service life from a heater. More if it gets pampered with such treatment as proper winter covering and regular cleaning and maintenance. Far less if chemical issues arise in a pool and are not dealt with properly. A heater can fail in a matter of weeks if water conditions are that poor.

So, to answer your question; with proper installation, maintenance and water treatment I’d put it at 15 – 18 years before the heater will have spent itself from wear.

Dolphin pool cleaner stops after 3-5 minutes

It is usually either the power supply or the motor unit or both. None of those items are considered do-it-yourself repairs. For information on sending the unit in for service you can check with the manufacturer at or try us at If the unit is several years old and in need of repair and also the replacement of wear items such as brushes and/or tracks, it can be cost prohibitive to fix. It is helpful if you get the serial number from the units casing when you contact us or Maytronics so we have an idea of how old it is.

Spa Pools, setting up spa pool with chemicals etc

Hi curlyall,

I'm Harvey the Master Plumber.

Your problem is: You have just brought a secound hand spa, you are woundering what sort of chemicals etc are required, there are no instuctions with it

If your spa is the type that you fill once, then you must treat it just like a swiming pool. Go to the local pool supplies store. They will be happy to set you up. Don't forget PH testing kit! Test it every day. And I prefer non chlorine chemicals. It's also helpfull to have a small submersible pump in case you need to replace the water sometime. Happy soaking!
