Question about Computers & Internet
I figure it must not be dead but have another problem. I searched online and disabled his windows ability for it to turn off the USB ports to save e energy. That did not do anything. I also removed any USB device devices and went into device manager and under Universal Serial Bus controller's entries. I noticed there was a USB device that said unknown?. I uninstalled it and the hit, "scan for hardware changes" and rebooted. But it came up the same way, unknown device?. I did that several times. There were no other USB devices or anything attached to the laptop at the time. Anyone have any ideas what could be wrong with this USB jack or if it can be fixed & how? His laptop is a dual boot with both windows XP and Windows 7. That port acts the same on both windows systems. Just a little bit of power on the left USB port, but not enough power to run anything,

Testimonial: "Hi This is for Everyone that answered so far, Thank you for the answers. To answer the questions posted: 1. Max Thank you. When I plug something in that port, it usually will not work, however I have plugged in a USB mouse that has various led’s on it and the led’s light up although pretty dim, (so it must not be completely dead) but the computer does not see the mouse or recognize it or look for drivers for it, like if I plugged it into another port. I also made a mistake in my initial info, it is a dual core 2. 0. Thank you Max, any ideas from here? 2. SAndrew, Thank you. I have already done a full & complete restore/ recovery, of both systems on his laptop including all drivers and still no change. 3. mediarich, Thank you for the link. That is a good idea to get the PCMCIA usb card. I actually bought him one, but they come out so easily he does not want to use it, I think still better than nothing when everything these days uses usb ports & you never have enough of them. 4. Cajun, Thank you. Yes I checked the Bios and the USB were enabled there, I looked at everything in Bios to see if there was anything that did not look right but saw nothing. If anyone else has any ideas of what this problem is or how to fix it please let me & any anyone else with this problem know & thank you for all you help & postings."

Two solutions would be to either restore your pc to before the problem started, using system restore on accesories menu, or use the recovery cd or the recovery folder Acer laptops usually have on the 'D' drive and re-install usb controllers and drivers.

SOURCE: USB Ports Stopped Working
Well let me be the first to say I see you have skills. All of your troubleshooting is exactly by the book. The only thing I see that was not checked is the CMOS (BIOS) setup screen to make sure that the USB function is enabled there. Good luck and let me know how it goes, we have a couple of hundred years of experience at FixYa so keep me updated if you have any more problems.

SOURCE: usb ports not recognized
Did this suddenly start to occur? Were they working before? If so, it is very simple - shut down computer, remove the battery and unplug any power source, wait a couple of minutes and reassemble and power up. Wala! I read all kinds of complicated instructions, started with the simple, and problem solved.
