Question about Audio Players & Recorders

1 Answer

Technics SU-G91 volume control does not track when turned and +/- numbers/volume shown/heard.

Turning volume knob varies the volume +/- in a non-linear output. Turning volume control clockwise may turn output down rather than up some times. Turning CCW opposite effect.

Sorry. I haven't looked this model up, but I have your answer. I'm going to assume this unit is less than 10 to 15 years old. They no longer use, the type of volume control you think of. You can proof this out, by turned the knob left or right. It should probably have no stops, as you remember. That's because this is not a volume control, as in variable resistor. It is called a Rotary Encoder. It is basically two switches that are pushed when you turn the control to the left or right. This creates pulses(actually a high or a low) which go into the display microprocessor(one of the computers inside your unit). When the microprocessor control receiver this input, it controls another IC, called an Electronic Volume Control.

Sorry for the lengthy explanation. The issue lies with the Rotary Control. This is not an uncommon issue for any of the manufactures. This is not a DIY repair. It will require a professional Audio tech. If you need more assistance, or would like to inquire about a repair, please visit my website at audioserviceclinic.com. Thank you.

How do I hook up a stereo reciver to the technics su-g91

I assume you want to use the SU-G91 as a power amplifier to drive your speakers. If your receiver has connections for inserting an equalizer (may be labeled pre-amp output and power amp input), remove the jumpers between the pre-amp and the power amp, then run cables from the pre-amp to the SU-G91 inputs. You can have an equalizer between the receiver and the integrated amplifier.
If this is not available, use the recording output (for a tape recorder on older receivers). Note that the volume control on the receiver will be bypassed with this connection.

I have an Technics SU-V3 amplifier when you try to adjust the sound it causes the speakers to crackle(only when your turning it) it is not the speakers as have tried it with several sets of speakers...

It sounds like the volume control itself is causing the problem. All you need do is get to it from the inside the unit and spray it with Servisol switch cleaner. That should do the trick. It's just dust in the track of the control. If there are any other rottary controls spray them too!

Technics SU-G91 OVERLOAD PROBLEM

THe amp has detected a problem and shutdown to prevent further damage. This unit has 2 amp pacs inside and one or both have failed. If you can solder, you can fix this yourself. The main amp pac is an SVI3206 and can be purchased online for about $60.

Keep me posted.

Technics SU-G91 OVERLOAD PROBLEM

I had the same problem. As soon as the volume reached about 24db it would go into overload. I was able to fix it by soldering all the connections on the larger power module. The one connected the the heat sink. When I took it apart there where several solder points that had come loose.
