Question about Vicks V3100 1.2 Gallon Humidifier

Open Question

How to repair humidifier?

We've had the humidifier for a while now and I've always done usual maintenance seasonally. I've noticed though that the water level does not drop. I remember it used to make the bubbling noise like the water coolers do but it does not do that anymore. The water level does not drop even when run throughout the night. I've used vinegar to clean any buildup of minerals, what else can I do? The fan is working just fine just having problems with the machine not using the actual water.

SOURCE: no steam

Try putting a teaspoon of salt in the vaporizer, it should start blowing.

SOURCE: white dust

Suggest you try using distilled water in the Humidifier in the baby's room. If your seeing that much dust you must have heavy hard water in your borough, suggest you replace the filter more often & or Demineralization Cartrid if your not already doing so.
Hard water is tough on many things in your home. Washing clothing can produce dark & light spots, some rust in color. Build up of rust & minerals through out the water lines in home. Bad taste. Build up of white stains in glasses & the list goes on.
The best choice would be a filtering system to remove most if not all hard water as it enters your water lines. Many companies near you can help you remove this problem. Listed below is one such company.

SOURCE: my vaporizer is running however there is no steam

Well, let's consider what we have:

How old is the vaporizer?-- Could the heating coil be all limed up?
Lime-Away, or Vinegar might help clear the Calcium and mineral build up on the heating element-
Or there might be a bad connection?-- Do you have any lights lit?

Open it up, and tell us what you find-

3 year old Essick tower D46720 sat during off season. Cleaned, filled and plugged in today and will not turn on. Lights are on; nothing happens.

The red water level light was on even though both tanks were full. The white float behind the filter WAS stuck to the bottom of the tank. I just moved it to its floating position and voila! it is working.

I want to know best way to clean the humidifier and how often?

It all depends on a couple of factors.

First is the type of humidifier your using. Portable or whole house connected to the furnace. Steam, ultrasonic or filter. Your unit's instructions is the best guide as to how often you need to clean it and this can vary from every day to once a heating season.

My recommendation is to watch and clean the unit as soon as you see scale forming. Then in the future, reduce this to just before you see scale forming.

The second is the type of water you are using. Hard tap water is the worst and usually will require every day for small portable steam or ultrasonic units to once a week for filter models. For central whole house humidifiers, once a month (perhaps as little as every two weeks if your water is really hard, >10 grains hardness). There is no fixed formula for this, the idea is to perform on-going, preventive maintenance.

Soft or conditioned water will contain the same amount of minerals as hard, but the softener has replaced the calcium minerals with sodium minerals. (Sodium bicarbonate actually). The result is the humidifier will still form scale but it much easier to remove. With soft water scale, you can just break up the scale with your fingers and the filters can just be submerged in clean water and the salt scale will re-dissolve.

Third, with distilled water, you may only need to clean any of these units annually. (No minerals to for scale).

With any filter humidifier, consider using a commercial bactericide to prevent the growth of bacteria when the water sits for long periods (>14 days). Not so critical with soft water as the salt will retard the growth of bacteria, but very important with hard or distilled water. Don't use this product in ultrasonic or steam humidifiers as it will be carried into the air along with the water vapor, and can be considered as toxic.

With hard water, use a 50/50 solution of white vinegar and water to dissolve the scale buildup. This works best if done on a regular basis. If left go too long, it become impossible to clean properly. You need only use regular water when using soft or distilled water in your humidifier.

What might be wrong, and is it worth repairing?

I think it is a fairly simple bit of equipment which probably uses a synchronous motor which rarely cause problems, though they sometimes seize and need freeing. Sometimes something might get caught in the fan and stop it.
Whatever is wrong it is clear you can't go any further without taking it apart and maybe checking a few things with a multimeter so if you aren't able to do that it means asking someone else to take a look for you and that someone will want paying even if it becomes an uneconomic repair.
Repair shops want paying these days even for giving an estimate.

My best advice is if you can't do these jobs yourself to start building the sort of circle of friends who are more hands on, who know stuff you don't. Most tradespeople are intelligent, humorous and fun and it is great having them on your side.

My advice doesn't help you now but in the long run it could save you a parcel of money and reduce the amount of planet-destroying stuff you need to throw away.

Mold can really cause problems with humidifiers-
They do need to be serviced, cleaned up, and something like weak bleach used to kill mold spores, -- get it all tidy and clean!
Were you able to clean out the drain line?-- and is it draining now?
And is the float valve shutting off the water flow, before it reaches the overflow drain pipe?
Another concern would be the soaking pad-- Has it been changed recently?

I need a job with 50% maintenance

Hi, I am sorry, but have no openings at this time. Changing seasons is my slow period. Keep in mind you need to have your E.P.A. Certification card to handle freon, of to even install gauges on a system during maintenance. If you are qualified, then hang in there and you will find one in this field.
Good Luck!

The humidifier doesn't make enough vapor

Soak it with vinegar for several hours then use a soft nylon bristled brush to scrape off the minerlized crust and rinse. You probably need to replace the silver stick & mineralization cartridge more often.
