How do i speed up my wifi?
There're a number of ways to "broaden" your Broadband Wi-Fi link.
(a) move laptop closer to the Wireless Router, and/or remove signal obstructions between laptop and Wireless Router.
(b) move the Wireless Router to a channel other than the default (channel 6).
HOW: login to the Router management pages at 192.168.1.1, and change it.
(c) upgrade your Wireless-G router to Wireless-N (with the Linksys WRT310N you've aready done that, however).
(d) Switch from Wi-Fi to hardwired with a Cat 5e ethernet cable - you'll have better throughput and fewer CRC errors with a hardwired link.
(e) Recognize that 99% of the time the upload/download speed bottleneck is not the Broadband link, but the computer laptop system itself, so the best way to increase the speed of your Wi-Fi link is to optimize the computer system. Normally, increasing the physical link speed is wasted time and money - something those Verizon FIOS commercials will never tell you.
Put your money into upgrading RAM and running fewer startup group processes eating into system virtual memory (SWAPFILE.SYS) space.
If you can access only trusted web sites (typical of a workplace workstation), then you can optimize browser operation by eliminating Real-Time Anti-Virus shields such as: (File System Shield) scan on open, (File System Shield) scan on write, HTTP shield, Network shield, suspicious behavoir shield, Script Shield, and IM Shield. This will help to optimize your browser's activities. Web browser software is well known to be among the least efficient software ever devised. The typical user will have half a dozen Browser Extensions, and a dozen or more Browser Plug-ins, each further burdening an already over-burdened Browser. Most Users don't even know how many Browser Extensions and Plug-ins they're running, and inadvertently permit new ones to be installed daily.
Consider upgrading your laptop's CPU, rolling back from Windows 7 to Windows XP, and changing Operating Systems from a Microsoft Windows OS to Linux. Also consider using an Apple MacBook.
Lastly, perform a security scan on your system - nothing wrecks a laptop's performance faster than a virus/worm/trojan horse/rootkit/malware/spyware/tracking cookies/supercookies, etc.
