I have the same problem. The machine has been getting louder and louder and now the light colored clothes come out with dark stains. I will check the transmission.

Leaving black residue (spots) on clothing

Black spots usually come from the agitator shaft bearing seal which will, when worn, allow oil from the transmission to seep into the wash. Replace the seal, and maybe the upper bearing if the shaft itself will move visibly from side to side in various directions. If the machine is still under warranty, take advantage. Hope this helps!

Washer is leaving huge brown spots on clothing

Re-wash the clothing a couple of times , and see if the spots come out . If they do , that means you are using a liquid fabric softener , and the softener is not completely dissolving .Either set the wash for a longer period of time and use warm or hot water , or , use softener sheets in the dryer .
If the spots are oil , they probably cannot be removed , and replaceing the washer , would be the suggestion .

My clothes are being stained by brown/black marks. I think it is an oil leak into the drum. Is it a seal and is it easy to fix? Frigidaire Gallery Model # FWT647GHSO

Spots on clothing in a washer are usually caused by a reaction between detergent and fabric softeners, but to check and see if these spots are petroleum based (oil), try removing the spots with solvent. If the spots will come out with solvent, but not with soap and water, then it could be transmission oil that is leaking into the tub and this is very bad news. This was a common problem on the older GE and Hotpoint washers. Sorry to hear about the problem that you are having and I hope this helped. Best wishes.
