Why am I getting a "Server Failed" notification when running the network diagnostics?

I have changed out the ethernet cable, connected to another port in my hub and also tried connecting directly to the computer, all to no avail. Please advise what this failure indicates. Other printers on my network are responding as expected. I am working on Mac OS 10.8.5 Thank you for some direction in resolving this challenge.

The printer is not communicating with the computer. Recheck the IP address on the printer against which port on the computer is selected. If everything checks out ok then uninstall the printer driver and reinstall.

Lawrence, I cannot find the IP address for the printer. How is that found? Also, where do the printer drivers reside and how do I uninstall? Thank you for your help!

I have discovered the IP address by printing out a test page. Not sure what you mean to IP address on the printer against which port on the computer is selected. It is set up to communicate via ethernet. Because I have 2 printers, they are networked via a hub. The hub lights indicate the port is operational. I am attaching an error message that appeared when I ran Ricoh diagnostics. Please advise further as I have been sending out jobs to print. thank you.

The printer driver resides on all the computers that have access to the printer. Try going to Ricoh's web site to download the latest driver for your OS. Install the driver using the instructions provided with the driver. make absolutely sure no other printer on your network is using the IP address you found by printing the test page.

No joy. I d/l the drivers from the Ricoh site for OS 10.7. There was not an option for OS 8.x (PPD Installer, Ver.1.0.0 24/04/2008 193 KB). I opened the Print&Scan dialog and Reset Printers. I attempted to Add Printer, but the Ricoh did not appear in the list. I was able to successfully add my desk jet. I did confirm that each printer has a unique IP address. What is missing?

I have resolved the challenge. The network addresses was one digit off for the Ricoh printer. The computer and the printer are now communicating but I have lost my functionality for specifying which paper tray to use, and which paper tray to deliver to. I have upgraded from a PPC based MiniMac to a MiniMac running Os10.8. any ideas how to get my functionality back?

You may have to wait for an updated driver from Ricoh.

I need to connect a D-Link router to my cable modem so that I can use my laptop anywhere in my home

Cable-modem <-- Ethernet cable --> WAN (or "Internet") port on the router

LAN port on router <-- Ethernet cable --> network-port on your laptop

Then, access the "built-in" web-server on the router,
and run the "Wireless Networking Setup" wizard:
* to set an SSID ("network-name")
* an encryption-level (Hint: choose 'wpa')
* a password for your wireless network

Then, disconnect the Ethernet cable from your computer,
and then "wireless available wireless networks".
Select your newly-created network, and connect to it.

I have a Belkin N-Router and I was wondering how to connect it to my modem because the cable it has connects only to where the modem's ethernet cable is located when i just run my modem, and there is only...

plug the one ethernet cable from the modem into the router wan port . The modem will have an ip address note this and then change the ip address to one higher than the modem for the router's ip address and change the ip address in the router to make the gateway ip address the modem ip address.
Disable the DHCP server in the Router iIf the modem has an active DHCP server in the router.
Plug the rest of your network into the other router ethernet ports.

Want to connect aDI-604UP wired router to a DIR-615 wireless router to use as a printer port wirelessly

Hello Richard.

For this, you have two types of connection
1. LAN_LAN (ethernet to ethernet) -->wireless router is acting as a switch
2. LAN_WAN (ethernet to internet)-->wireless router is acting as a wireless router

in this case, you need the LAN_LAN connection

Physical connection:
plug an ethernet cable from the ethernet port on the wired router and connect the other end of that cabl to the ethernet port on the wireless router

Configuration:
log-on to the setup page of the wireless router, do this while the wired router is turned off.
-open your internet browser, type 192.168.0.1 on the address bar. Then type the username & password for the router ( default admin as the username, password : ).
Under the setup tab, click manual configuration. Then click network settings, change the router ip address to 192.168.0.5 & disable the DHCP server. save the settings. Just personalize the wireless network.

Hope this helps.

Can't get my p.c connected to the router,,,

Use an Ethernet cable to connect the network-port on the laptop to one of the LAN ports on the router.
Then, access the web-server "inside" the router, to run the "Wireless Networking Setup Wizard", to add an SSID,
set an encryption-level (use WPA), and to set a password/passphrase.

Then, you can disconnect the Ethernet cable, and activate the PC's wireless adapter, and select the SSID, and enter the password.

Dlink wireless windows vista

Connect an Ethernet cable to one of the 'LAN' ports on the router and to the network-port on your computer.

Click Start
Click Run
Type CMD and press ENTER
Type IPCONFIG and press ENTER.

You should get output like:

Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection:
IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : 124.268.336.448
Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 123.456.789.0

Start Internet Explorer.
Type: http://123.456.789.0
to connect to the web-server "inside" the router.

Run the "wireless network setup wizard" to configure the router
with an SSID and a password.

Save and reboot the router.

Disconnect the Ethernet cable.

Your computer should report "Wireless Networks are available".
Choose your network, and enter the password for the network.

My dell computer suddenly is not connecting to the internet and is showing "network cable unplugged" error

  1. start the troubleshooting process by making sure that everything (routers, switches, hubs, modems, and computers) is firmlyplugged in.
  2. If your computer is on and the other end of the Ethernet cable isconnected to a network device, the link or activity LED should light. If the light remains dark after you plug in the cable, replace thecable. If replacing the cable gives the same result (no green light), then go to the next step.
  3. Once you’ve eliminated cabling as a source of the problem, it’s time tolook to your computer. Start by making sure that your computer is able toaccess your Ethernet card. A good tool for doing this, and subsequentnetwork troubleshooting, is the command prompt.
  4. Select Start, All Programs, Accessories, and then Command Prompt. When the Command Prompt window opens, type ipconfig –alland press ENTER. Various lines of information will display, dependingon how your system is configured. Look for a section labeled EthernetAdapter Local Area Connection. This section should include a linelabeled Description, which should be a description of your Ethernetcard. If you see it, then your computer knows about your Ethernet cardand has successfully loaded the necessary drivers. If the Descriptionline is blank or missing, you will need to reinstall the drivers foryour Ethernet card.
  5. Your Ethernet card doesn’t detect a connection to the Ethernet cable. Open a command prompt, type ipconfig –all, and press ENTER. If the section that starts with Ethernet adapter LocalArea Connection contains a line labeled Media, with a status of MediaDisconnected, then your computer is unable to detect that a link hasbeen made from your Ethernet card through the Ethernet cable to anothernetwork device, such as your computer or router. Recheck the cabling.Use a known good cable to connect your computer to a known good networkdevice and then perform the check again. If the status is still MediaDisconnected, and you are sure that the cable and the network devicethe cable connects to are good, then you may have a bad Ethernet card.Reinstall the Ethernet card. If the problem continues, you may need toreplace the card.
  6. Other things to check:
  7. Bad connection, bad cable, or wrong cable. The ports on arouter, hub, switch, wireless access point, and print server can, likeany other device, go bad. However, the most common problem is not a badport but a bad or loose connection, a bad Ethernet cable, or the wrongtype of cable. Refer to the Cabling section above, to eliminate thesepossibilities.
  8. Wrong port. One possible cause of Ethernet port problems isusing the wrong port on a network device. For example, routers have WAN(wide-area network) and LAN ports. These ports accept the same Ethernetcabling but are not interchangeable. The same is true of hubs andswitches that have uplink ports, which are specially wired LAN portsthat allow easy cascading of multiple hubs and switches. In some cases, the uplink port is also a normal LAN port controlled by a switch on thedevice. If you’re using the uplink port as a normal LAN port, make surethe device is configured properly for this type of use.

If aport doesn’t appear to be working, you can use the link light toconfirm it. Port link lights should always be lit when a good cable isconnected between the port and another working network device. If youuse known good cable and a known good network device to test the portbut the link light isn’t lit, you may have a bad port. You can eitherreplace the network device, or in the case of a hub/switch, add a hubor switch to gain more LAN ports.
  9. You cannot connect to other computers or router/Internet. Whenother computers in your LAN can connect to each other, as well as tothe Internet or other services, and your computer cannot, this may bean indication that your computer did not receive an IP (InternetProtocol) assignment when you booted.
  10. Open a command prompt, type ipconfig –all, and press ENTER. Inthe section labeled Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection, look forthe line labeled IP. If it starts with 169, you have a self-assignedIP, which indicates that your computer was not able to acquire an IPassignment from the DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol) server.

Test your access to the DHCP server by using the ping command. Open a command prompt and type pingfollowed by the IP address of the DHCP server. Your DHCP server isprobably the same as your router. For example, if your router’s IP is192.168.1.1, then type ping 192.168.1.1 and press ENTER. Youshould see four lines of text, starting with Reply From 192.168.1.1:Bytes 32, followed by time values that indicate how much time elapsedbetween the ping command and the router’s response. If you see fourlines that say Request Timed Out, then your computer cannot reach yourrouter/DHCP server.

Make sure the router is plugged in,turned on, and properly configured to provide DHCP services.
These are just a few things to try to help figure out if it is your cable, ethernet card, router, or some other problem.
