Well I know it a dirty job but someone has to did. Unhook the pump from the plumbing and take the pump out so you can see what fell into the sump pit and is lodged in the impellers.
If you have it out already turn the impiller backwords and see if that frees it up.

I have a Flotec model fp5172. Will this pump automatically shut off when it reaches max pressure?I

No, this pump does not natively turn on and shut off based on pressure. You need to add a pressure switch and tank. Flotec has the manual for the FP5172 here: https://www.pumpagents.com/pdf/FlotecPumps/Flotec-FP5172.pdf .

I hope this helps.

I purchased and installed this model pump (FPOS1790PCA). The first couple of times there was water on the pool cover, the pump seemed to work fine. I have several inches of rain water on the cover...

You may want to check with Flotec first since many of the manufacturers handle warranty claims directly instead of the store being involved. If the unit falls within the stores return period then just take it back and excahange/return it...if not, Flotec is at: http://www.flotecpump.com/ResidentialContactUs_ContactUs.aspx

Select warranty from the drop down menu and go from there.

Clogged, Impeller loose and not turning. Remove strainer from bottom of pump and check for clogg and see if the impeller is turning.

Pump keeps turning off

this pump needs about 21/4" of water to operate properly, this pump will not remove all the water from the cover and will cycle on and off as it looses prime. If the motor turns completely off, it may be a an issue with low line voltage. you can try using a lager gauge extension cord to try and fix it, otherwise have an electrician test the line voltage.

Flotec Sprinkler Pump not priming

it might be that the pump is prewired at 230 volt and you are running a 115 power supply to it, if motor just humms and little water comes out this might be your fix

Low water flow

sounds like air is trapped in the system somewhere. that is why any pump will surge. check the lines going in to make sure it isn't sucking air somewhere along the way and make sure the discharge line is clear so it can pump out fully.
