SATA DVD drive not found in BIOS

I have a Gigabyte GA-8VM800M-775 motherboard and am at a loss to understand what's going on. The motherboard has two SATA connectors besides the usual 2 IDE channels. I have recently replaced the IDE hard drive with a Maxtor SATA drive. It's connected using the SATA 0 channel. Yesterday, I purchased a new LG DVD burner to replace an old CD-ROM and connected it using the SATA 1 channel. The BIOS failed to find it at all so I have just updated to the latest BIOS version without success. I purchased an IDE/ SATA connector and plugged it into the IDE 0 channel - again without success at finding it in the BIOS. When I purchased the drive initially, the led on the front flashed all the time and the tray wouldn't open except with the use of a paperclip. When connected via IDE 0 channel, it now opens using the front button - something it doesn't do when connected by the SATA 1 channel.
The SATA BIOS is set to IDE as I don't use RAID though it's set to Auto as suggested by the manufacturer and the Channel and 3 Masters (for using SATA drives) are set to 'Auto'. Have got to the stage am not sure if it's the motherboard or the drive. The drive is obviously under warranty but before returning it, any suggestions?

Re: SATA DVD drive not found in BIOS

If the drive is not detected in the BIOS the problem is mostly with your drive. Try connecting to the other slot where the HDD is connected if problem persists replace your drive

Hard disk support, How much? 250GB Or less than

Your motherboard has two SATA connectors, this means you can use any capacity of drive, and also that you can use two drives. So your motherboard has no limit to the size of the hard disk, you can accommodate as large a hard drive as you want.

Bios won't boot, fans work, drives are flashing but it won't boot, no beeps.

try replacing all the leads that attach to your hard drive including electrical extensions + IDE,SATA and the ones that attach from your motherboard to hard drive
make sure all leads that are attached to your drives dvd\cd 3 1/2 inch floppy have secure connections and are not faulty or just replace them they are probably old and faulty ?
good luck
