Question about Acer Aspire 5100 Notebook

Keyboard & mouse are dead

Hi people,
glad to be among you all....
Neither the Kboard nor the mouse are working, in such way I can't even hit F2 to enter the Bios.
My laptop is 2 yrs old and it worked fine until now....
I guess it has to do with ACPI settings, since I tweaked a bit with it just to set the proper "standby" time and all....
Any advice?
thanks for all
paolo

My Acer Aspire 5100 is also 2 years old. The Keyboard and touchpad stopped working. As I was using it, it began to lose track of the mouse. Now I cannot even use the F2 function to start in safe mode. NONE of the USB ports recognize external mouse or Keyboards. The mouse does light up but does not contrrol the pointer. Cannot get beyond windows sign in screen. Tried running computer with and without battery - made no difference.

    Hi,
    here is an up-dating report:
since I can't enter the bios to set my pc booting from cd, I tried to remove the hd to force the machine booting from cd.
This done, I've inserted a live cd version of ubuntu and, voilà, the linux based OS started up and keyboard and mouse worked fine....;-))
Nothing to do as I set the hd back into the laptop, btw :-((
Guess it's not a hw prob, neither a connection disguise...
Strange to know how many people sorted out with the same issue...
    cheers

    same problem
i'm living in a developing nation now, so i doubt if there was power overcharge
any of others from places with bad electricity?

  • Anonymous Dec 05, 2007

i have the sam notebook and had the same problem.

tried everything, the solution posted here seemed to work.

Hard power-off (hold the power button until the laptop turns off)
    Unplug the AC adaptor
    Remove the battery
    Plug in the AC adaptor
Hold ctrl and turn the power on. You should arrive at a black screen.
Hard power-off again, then turn the power on.

Of course it was not that easy, when i went to reboot it took 10 tries and an hour before the black screen went away....but then my computer was back.

Wish i new why it worked?

Hello everybody. I has the same problem of all of you....It happened I think almost 2 months ago (is my sister's laptop) and I can't do anything with the laptop. I was spending a lot of time searching on the Internet this kind of problem and it seems to be usual in this model of acer laptop. And also I realised that the problems with the laptops was ocurred on the begining of October since now. So strange...I just want to know more about the Nyago's solution because I don't understand well how can he fix the problem... I mean: I never reach the black screen when I am holding the Ctrl button and then turn on the computer.
Thanks for all of you and sorry for my english.

I have the same problem (except its a 3100 not 5100) however when trying the solution (Ctrl held when powering on) the laptop still boots as normal (runs a checkdisk then proceeds to login screen). Have trying briefly holding Ctrl and holding all the way to the login screen, never ends up with a black screen- any ideas?

  • leblin Jan 11, 2008

I have the same problem on an Aspire 3100. I'm unable to get a black screen by pushing CTRL key while booting up, but i was able to get a black screen by pushing both CTRL keys + ESC and booting up, also ALT+F10 got me a black screen. I left the computer on for over an hour on this black screen but didn't fix the problem.

I've also confirmed that I can boot into a linux live CD and the keyboard + touchpad are working, but the problem persists once I reboot.

I've even tried flashing the bios. this was very tricky without a keyboard. i had to create a bootable CD-ROM to automatically run the bios update. Didn't help the problem at all though.

I hope someone has a solution for this. The laptop is only a few months out of warranty.

I have the same problem with 2 aspire notebooks both with the ATI Radeon XPress chipset and Turion 64 processor. Models are Aspire 5103 and Aspire 5043. Both stopped working 2 weeks ago with the exact same problem. Keyboard and Touchpad not working. Cannot even get into BIOS by pressing F2. External Mouse and Keyboard doesn't work either. Have emailed Acer tech support and awaiting answer. Have tried above solutions to no avail.

OK. ( or not ok) Keyboard and mouse do not work, on Acer Aspire 3100.

PC Doctor says that the motherboard is fried....NOT SO!

Do this : remove power supply. remove battery. hold power button down on lifeless laptop for one minute. hook up power supply only. turn on.

I had to hit the windows key before I saw life return. The task manager appeared. Then a control F, then the arrow keys worked. A function F2 unlocked the mouse. This came from Acer tech support over the phone.

TRY THIS FIRST. Acer charges 400 plus to replace bad boards.

  • Anonymous May 06, 2008

same problem on my 5100. all i had to do is remove main battery, remove power adapter, wait 60 seconds. then power up with ac adapter only. xp did a chkdsk, and when it finished booting into xp, everything was working. thanks

I just can not believe this, it seems that ACER has a real bug, whether MB or sowtware. I have installed two boards up to this point and still have no KB or mouse. Can not enter BIOS setup either. I was amazed at the rapid response from ACER tech support. $440.00 dollars for a new MB. How many do I have to go through? I have tried several solutions found as well as variations. I've run out of patience. Any help would be appreciated, you know, another brain....

    Thanks

Power button must be held down for one minute with no power supply or battery hooked up. Also the keyboard and mouse can be locked with a function key combo. Watch for this.

I have an Acer Travelmate 2440. KB, Mouse and USB just stopped working. The system boots up, windows loads and after that no response from KB or Mouse. Tried everything. Disassembled everything, took out the CMOS battery hoping to reset the BIOS options, but no luck. Tried the CTRL holding and powering up procedure, but nothing. Any other suggestion.....

  • AcerSucks99 Mar 29, 2009

Weak solutions all FAIL, Acers website support steers clear of this problem, you loons posting those other FAILED links stop being retarded, you must for for Acer, no one is that stupid.
NOW does anyone have a solution that works?

  • Anonymous May 22, 2009

Acer no mouse , no keyboard people:
    The PCMCIA slot will work.
You can use it to install a usb card
and plug in an external mouse and keyboard.
Clumsy, but at least you have access.

I just fixed this problem by doing the following:

Hard power-off (hold the power button until the laptop turns off)
Unplug the AC adaptor
Remove the battery
Plug in the AC adaptor
Hold ctrl and turn the power on. You should arrive at a black screen.
Hard power-off again, then turn the power on.

Just following up on this problem. I am a computer retailer and have sold 5 of these acer aspire 5000 series notebook with the AMD/ATI chipset. Guess what 4 of the 5 notebooks have now been returned to me with the exact same problem as all of you, where the USB ports and the Onboard Keyboard and Mouse stops working. The operating system will continue to boot but without any controls these Notebooks are useless.

All these products failed after a year of service and are all passed their manufacturer's warranty period. However the 80% rate of failure is grounds for a class action suit. Now I know you guys don't buy 5 of these at a time, but believe me, this deserves an explanation from Acer. I would certainly like to give my customers some of their investments back.

please post the serial number of your machines and detail of error when replying to this post, and I will compile this into a formal letter to Acer North America and if I fail to get an answer I will have lawyers follow up on it.

Uplug laptop, remove battery. Hold power button down for one minute. Start laptop without battery. This action dumps static charge. IF this doesn't work, you can try using the pcmcia card.Plug in external keyboard and mouse to the card.
Handicapped, but at least it is useable.

My wife's 5100 lost keyboard, touchpad and usb. I used a pcmia card to attach an external keyboard and mouse. This let me access Device Manager and reinstall drivers. All work fine now. (Pretty sure original problem occurred because of overheating.)

I have the same laptop, and it has many problems. The mainboard is ****. Advice: when it starts to fail, try using it as a desktop, with external keyboard, mouse, monitor if you have to, don't invest any more money in it because it will fail again, and don't buy acer any more.

Same problem, keyboard, touchpad and USB are dead...I can only control darkness of LCD - over keyboard, thats funny. Made CD with BIOS update, without needness of keyboard, its updated, but doesnt help. Tried start UBUNTU operation system - only from CD and keyboard worked...no comment. (I think, that is BIOS driver problem - UBUNTU uses own drivers), so looking for BIOS to replace...

I have the same problem w/my old Acer, the keys broke and I have been using a wireless mouse for over a year, but just the other day, it stopped working and so did everything else, no mouse nothing, without a mouse you can't do anything!!!!
Now I'm worried I bought a new Acer back in March, I sure hope it doesn't do the same thing. I don't think it's because of heat, all our laptops sit on fan pads to keep them cool.

If you've tried the software restore it still won't respond i wouldassume there is an issue with your palm rest. Since both keyboard and mouse are unrepsonsive, it looks like just a connection issue. If you're out ofwarranty, somebody has to open the Laptop and replace the part. The partis available on ebay. Here's a guide on how to disassemble a Laptop. Maybe a tech savy friend can do it for you. If you want to pay to have somebody do it for you there are third party Laptop Repair Services.

My 18 month old Acer Aspire 5100 has been exhibiting similar behavior; a few minutes after bootup, I cannot use the mouse (touchpad) or keyboard (laptop). I tried plugging in exteral keyboard and mouse devices, but it made no difference. I don't use this computer that often, so I left if for a day or so and it seemed to be working again, but then started with the same problem. I tried to offload my files and much to my surprise, even after the KM locked up, the files continued to copy. I am beginning to suspect this is possibly an overheating issue, as when I leave the computer off for a significant amount of time, I can use the KM for a few minutes, but if I try to reboot right away, it only takes a moment or two before the KM don't work.

I tried this solution
Hard power-off (hold the power button until the laptop turns off)
Unplug the AC adaptor
Remove the battery
Plug in the AC adaptor
Hold ctrl and turn the power on. You should arrive at a black screen.
Hard power-off again, then turn the power on.

Which worked, but only when I held both the CTRL and ESC keys during bootup. I've been using the computer for almost an hour now and the keyboard and mouse are working.

I have the 5100, this happened, I was under warranty and they replaced the motherboard, good as new until now. Not even one full month later and I am frozen again. In order for the computer to be replaced it has to happen 4 times!! I don't understand why it is happening. I had it for a year with no problem at all.

Are your keyboard and mouse USB? If so, legacy USB support needs to be enabled in the BIOS. Try using a PS/2 keyboard and mouse as a temporary workaround until you get the BIOS settings down.

Try [Fn]-F2
I had same problem here, then just tried alt-F2, ctrl-F2 etc until I found the right combo. Looks like the [Fn] key is what activates the other built-in Fkeys. In other words, "it's not a bug, it's a feature".

Make sure the keyboard is working in bios. When you boot the computer hit f2 or Del. key to make sure the keyboard is working. Also make a note that the keyboards light blink while turning on the pc.

If you are able to go to BIOS that means the keyboard is working fine.

Boot your computer in safe mode by tapping F8 key while the computer is booting. Select safe mode and check if the keyboard and mouse is working in safe mode.

If it is working in safe mode. Do a system restore to a date where everthing was working fine.

Please revert with the result of above .
