You have a major failure on the motherboard. If it was your hard drive the system will boot up, but freeze on the main screen and you will hear clicking coming out of the hard drive. Red and Green flashing lights means there is a problem on the motherboard. Sometimes you can fix the problem by reflashing the Bios on the main motherboard.

Unfortunately my old Xbox was the victim of being tossed back and forth violently during a roomie battle and suffered accordingly. Today i spent 7 hours taking it to bits and checking stuff as i had the xmas lights flashing.. anyways, no love.. it's dead..:(

This also happens when an Xbox has been chipped incorrectly if you know anything about electronics open the Xbox up and see if there is a chip with around 12 wires soldered to the board that could be a problem ??

For the 3 red lights are flashing wont play its a common xbox 360 problem of overheating - microsoft are repairing all these problems - its the graphics card saying " TOO good graphics!"

Turn the console on, displays the xbox screen then screen goes off and a red light starts flashing on console, says system error

is this a single red light? if so, it is a E code error. if there are 2, it is a overheating problem. if its 3, it is a general system error which could be a number of things which you need to figure out the secondary error code to narrow down the problem.
to find the secondary error code:
1. after the red lights start flashing, hold down the "controller sync" button.
2. push the "eject" button 4 times and count the amount of red lights that flash. the red lights will begin to flash rapidly. secondary error codes are only 4 numbers. 1 light = 1, 2 lights = 2, 3 lights = 3 and 4 lights = 4.
after you get the code go to this website, and on the right hand side of the screen under "Xbox Repair Guide" select your PRIMARY error code (1,2,3 or 4 slow flashing red lights). then it will ask you to enter your SECONDARY error code, which is the one you discovered in the steps above.
this will give you a very narrowed down idea of what is wrong with your console, and will give us "questions answerers" a better idea on how to help ya out!

Those are called the Red Rings of Death, or 3 Red lights. They're pretty "feared" by most xbox360ers, as they seem to show that your xbox360 is *dead*. Try calling microsoft, because if it's in the warranty, you can trade it for a new one. I know it might be annoying, but it's the most simple solution...

3 Red Lights Flashing - is a general hardware failure
  • Unplug everything and let it sit for 20 min. Re-connect and try re-starting
  • If these steps do not resolve the behavior, turn the console off, remove the hard drive, and then turn on the console. If the 3x Red LED error light is no longer displayed, turn the console off, re-attach the hard drive, and then turn on the console.
  • Check the lights on the power supply. When you turn on the console, the power supply light should illuminate green even if the three lights on the console flash red.
