Question about Quantum Fireball 1.08 GB Hard Drive

1 Answer

Dead hdd Hi, I have a Quantum fireball HDD. Not sure of the capacity (I have had it for a while but not used it for so long). Anyhow, I need to recover some data from it and it seems not to work. When power is applied the drive spins and the light on the main board flashes but it soon stops spinning and cannot be accessed. The LED flashes seven times folowed by two times and then repeats. Can you tell me what to do to recover the data. Don't really care about the drive

Re: dead hdd

I am assuming that you have a Windows platform. Take the hard drive out out and try it on a Mac. Sometimes a Mac will pick up faster than Windows. I would try that first for sure. Finding a Mac computer is not hard if you have a computer retail store near bye. Some smaller outfits may test it for you for free and hook it up to a Mac. If my solution sounds off the wall: consider opening your hard drive knowing that any wrong tinkering can easily result in a totally useless drive. If you are ready to open it if a Mac doesn't work, go slow and don't bang it around. You can't get very far, but you could check for any loose wires and check the board with a tester when no power is attached. You should not try to open the area with the physical drives, any wrong move there will destroy any chance of recovery. If all seems to fail, then yes, give it a tap or so. The FBI will do it for a crazy cost that would make buying a car easy.Good luck

I need a Driver/Firmware for a Quantum Fireball 3.5 series part Number CX13A011 HARD DRIVE

as I stated in my first thread , no firmware or drivers
needed for internal HDD , and remember Windows
uses an allocated partition of 8 gigabytes for the OS
which will only leave 5 gigabytes left on a 13 gigabyte
HDD , and for solid state HDD , the only difference is
solid state has no moving parts , there are trying to impress us with technology that is over 35 yrs old
like a calculator other than its buttons its solid state

once you have installed them physically into your comptuer like that, start it up.

Format Quantum Fireball

Now you still have windows xp, and you have a clean 2nd hard drive.

You do not need to install windows xp on the 2nd drive

Problem putting a 30 gig quantum lct 15 3.5"series as a slave

Did you switch the jumper config back to Master or CableSelect before trying to install them as a single drive? Also check the Maxtor website, (they owned Quantum too), for the correct jumper settings. Some of these drives (like the Quantum Fireball lct series) need TWO jumpers not just one.That was the trick that fixed mine from not being recognized by the Bios or the Windows setup disk....I got it used with only a single jumper, but it needed two to put it Cable Select mode.

Slave HDD not formatting correctly and displaying low capacity

If the bios does not see it at anything bigger than 9MB then the system will not do anything more than that. Did you install the drive on the same cable as your primary drive? If so make sure that the jumpers are correct. Try puting the drive on the secondary cable with nothing else on the cable. If you do have it on the secondary cable Im going to guess that you have a CD rom or DVD rom on the cable. You might try puting the jumpers on cable select for both devices remembering that the one on the end of the cable will normally end up being the master. Try just working with the secondary cable so that you dont have any issues with drive conflicts with the Primary master drive. Once you see the full drive amount in the bios then you can format the new slave. Fat 32 is the flie system of choice for Win ME so try the newer file system after you see the full drive size in the bios. I use a program called casper XP but you can get a free program from most drive manufacturers. I like the Western Digital Lifeguard program. Its easy to use and works on almost any drive. Hope this helps... Dale

New hard drive

Hi ,

Appreciate the direct "Ask me" again.

I have had very good experience with most brands of hard drives.
  • for durability - Seagate Barracuda;
  • for performance/speed - Western Digital;
  • for high transfer rate - SATA rather than IDE.
Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards. Thank you for using FixYa.

The computer speed completely depends on the speed of quantity of RAM, HDD, processor and FSB of mother board. Your processor is good enough to give better result with windows XP and did not mention about the availability RAM, if less than 256 MB, you need to upgrade and you can upgrade HDD not so mandatory if you have more than 20% free space. Under maintenance practice do regular "DEFRAGMENTATION and CHECK DISK" from selecting driver properties under tool tab.RAM will surely give boost and do degramenation
