Trying to get online with Linux

I have an ADSL2 connection with Optus Australia and have recently installed Ubuntu Linux (Gutsy Gibbon) on a separate drive. Of course, Optus only supplied an installation disk for Windoze. I have managed to get Linux to recognise the net connection and it is picking up my IP but I can't configure the PPPoE to access it as every time I try to run the pppoeconf file to set it up, it returns an error message that it is unable to communicate with the modem and cannot proceed. Any suggestions please

Re: trying to get online with Linux

I use knoppix v3.3 (linux) to test a hardware part (1cd only, not the latest, but the fastest) boot from cd.

Test your system with that first.

Thats just a half part of the problem, but after that you have only 50% left. (I am not a linux expert, but I can use that CD easy)

Connect to router

There are plenty of good routers to pick from, but the choice you make depends on more than your DSL modem and computer. It depends on your wireless network needs.
What kind of structure are you working in?
How many floors do you need coverage on?
Do you plan to play any multiplayer online games?
Do you plan to stream video or audio media on your network?
Do you need to setup access to your network from the internet?
How important is your network's security?

All of these factors are key in deciding the best solution.

Cheap is never the best deciding factor. The average cost for a decent reliable router will range in price from $50 to $150 depending on features.

Same problem with speed stream

when it comes to mac you got to check with the network settings.
If the modem you are using has a DHCP program enabled, then you will have to configure the network settings (configure ipv4) using dhcp
and renew the ip address, if not then you will have to create a manual connection(internet connect) in the same network settings and use your ISP provided user name and the password to connect.
When your internet is connected using internet connected the enet light will be off on the modem

No activity on my new speedstream 4200

Ethernet and DSL lights are indicating you have ADSL available on your line, and that you have computers connected to the router.

What has probably happened is that Optus did not set up the new router with your username and password. Go to thw following website for details on how to setup the modem.

Manual Modem Settings The Optus DSL Broadband self-installation CD configures all the necessary settings for your DSL Broadband service. You do not need to manually configure your modem if you have run the self-installation CD. While the following information is provided for your reference, using the self-installation CD is the recommended method for configuring your modem.
The Siemens SpeedStream 4200 ADSL modem can use either USB or Ethernet to connect to your computer.
  • If you are connecting via USB you will need to run the self-installation CD to install the USB driver before you connect your modem. The Siemens SpeedStream 4200 ADSL modem supplied by Optus has been customised for the Optus DSL Broadband service. Only the USB driver supplied on the self-installation CD will work with the Optus service. If you do not have the self-installation CD, you can download the latest drivers from the Siemens website.
  • If you are connecting via Ethernet it is possible to manually configure your modem without the self-installation CD. Only a web browser is required.
After connecting your modem there are two key steps to manually configure your modem for the Optus DSL Broadband service:
  • PC settings - Configure your computer's Ethernet network interface.
  • Configure Your Modem - Set the password in your modem's configuration pages.
PC Settings Step by step instructions are provided for each of the supported Windows operating systems:
  • Windows 98/Me
  • Windows 2000
  • Windows XP
  • Windows Vista
Configure Your Modem To configure your modem settings you must now access the configuration manager using your web browser. This is done by entering the IP address in the address bar of the browser window as follows:
Note: If you are updating the password in your modem, please complete steps 1 to 3 only.
Step 1 of 5
  • Enter (Default IP address of the Optus Supplied Siemens SpeedStream 4200) to access the modem Configuration software. You may wish to add this page to your Favorites for easy access later.
  • The following modem System Summary screen will appear.
ss4200_home_disconnected.gif Step 2 of 5

  • Note: You will find your Optus DSL Broadband username and password on the letter you received with your self-installation kit.
  • Save these details by clicking the Save Settings button.
Step 3 of 5
  • The next screen will ask you to disconnect and reconnect to the Optus DSL Broadband service.
  • Click the link to return to the System Summary page.
  • Click the Disconnect button to disconnect the modem from the Optus DSL Broadband service. The text on the button will change to Connect.

  • If Optus Bridge is not selected click the radio button next to Optus Bridge to select it.
  • Click the Apply button.
Step 5 of 5 ss4200_reboot_1.gif

Switched internet service providers now the router doesn't work

You might want to check the routers settings to make sure that it is not configured to use PPOE connection which is for DSl and the Broadband connection. You can find the routers address by searching google. Linksys uses You can always try resetting the router by pushing the reset button usually found by the power plug in the back.

Connecting to Internet

Have you seen this?

I realize it's a bit old, but you might try posting there if nothing else (they might be more familiar with unix systems).
Also, you might post back here as to whether you are connecting with ethernet, wireless, or USB.

Siemens 4200 2 computers

Yes and No! The 4200 gives you the option to connect via USB or Ethernet. You can only use one or the other to connect. You have two options. The first DOES involve another "gadget". The second does not!

Solution #1

I realize you're not looking to use additional equipment, but a network hub, switch or router will give you what you need. You can pick up a very inexpensive router for under $50 or even better a wireless router for a few bucks more.

I recommend a Linksys Wireless Router (Model - WRT54G) as it is very user friendly and comes ready to use. Just connect the port labeled "Ethernet" to the "WAN" port of the Linksys Wireless Router. Then connect both of your computers to any of the four "LAN" ports.

Solution #2

You can connect the first computer directly to the 4200 via USB and connect the second computer directly to the first computers ethernet port using a Network Crossover cable. Without a router of hub between the two computers, a crossover cable is required to allow them to talk to each other.

Once you have them connected to each other, on the first computer open the network connection properties for your internet connection (will be the one setup during the install of the USB modem) and click "Share This Computers Internet Connection".

Now the first option is surely the most reliable and keeps the traffic separate.

Hope this help!

Setting up a static IP

Hi kellysdad,

Setting up static IP is what we called manually IP or not generated by DHCP. Maybe you where putting the same IP between your bridge and your network TCP/IP properties.

Try to removed your network devices from hardware control panel and installed it again..

Hope this will be helpful to you.

Best Regards,
