Remove bobbin case completely and check that the needle will go down properly. If so, put the bobbin case back in lining up the black arrow on the bobbin case (on left hand side) with the metal arm that comes out slightly on the left side. Sometimes, it is tight getting the case back in place properly. Once in place, check that the case will rock back and forth slightly.
Hope this helps.

Still having with husquvarna designer I sewing machine. Tried new needles, changed stabilizer, tightened tension and loosed tension and still it is wrapping around needle plate and bunching underneath

Check bobbin case for loose threads in spring area that could be causing bobbin not to hold enough tension on bobbin thread. You can check bobbin case tension by using your needle plate. Holding bobbin case in your hand, insert a bobbin and thread it through the spring as usual. On the end of the bobbin thread, tie your needle plate to the thread. Hold case in your hand side ways so that thread travels downward with needle plate and thread trails downward across the case. The case should be perpendicular to the table top or floor. The weight of the needle plate should be so that the thread does not travel down unless the bobbin case is shaken slightly. The thread should then travel down slowly but stop once you hold case steady. If this is ok, check top tension. Turn on the machine. Lower the presser foot. With needle threaded, pull the thread the needle. You should feel some resistance. If there is none. Raise the presser foot and brush out any loose threads that might be caught in the upper tension disks. Many times, loose threads can get caught here that will keep disks from closing completely.

Hope this helps. Good luck.

How to put together the bobbin case assembly

Replacing the bobbin case after changing the thread spool gets you back to sewing. The Singer Simple model is designed for the beginning sewer. Even with its simplistic design, often getting started takes a bit of time, concentration and practice. Without the bobbin casing properly in place, the machine will not sew. You can get the machine up and running again.

The little spool holds the thread inside the bobbin casing.
The little spool holds the thread inside the bobbin casing.

Turn off the power to the machine. Power is not needed for any part of the process. Turn the machine off and unplug for safety reasons.

Turn the hand crank on the machine to move the needle into the highest position. Move the presser foot the up position.

Open the hinged latch covering the front of the bobbin cover. This is the device that holds the spool in place.

Place the threaded spool inside the inner casing. Place in so the thread is running in a clockwise direction.

Slide the thread through the slot opening on the let bottom of the casing. The slot is next to the outer arm of the casing. Close the hinged latch.

Hold the casing so the outer arm is sticking straight up. The thread will be coming out to the left of the arm; lay it under the arm to the right.

Push the casing into the internal bobbin slot on the machine. It will lightly snap into place.

Replace the outer machine cover over the bobbin

My 974 is not stitching and wont pick up the bobbin thread

First check that the needle isn't bent. (The simplest thing is to try a new needle.) Next check that you have a correctly wound and installed bobbin. The hole should be facing up and the bobbin thread comes off the bobbin to the left. Make sure that you threaded the bobbin correctly (notch A at the center and then to slot B to the left. (About 7 if you have the center front of the bobbin area at 6 on an analog 12-hour clock.) Pull the thread diagonally across the bobbin and then close the faceplate with the thread going through the opening of the slideplate. Hold onto the top thread while trying to bring up the bobbin thread.

If the bobbin thread still will not come up, remove the bobbin and clean the bobbin case. You may want to clean under the case as well, see page 81 of the manual. This is page 83 of the PDF: http://www.singerco.com/uploads/download/652_288-974-972-244-2405-588-875-1195-3130-3140.pdf .) Do all of the oiling of your machine while you do this maintenance if you haven't done it in a while.

The bobbin case has several parts that combine to provide good bobbin thread behavior. First there is a tension set screw that keeps the bobbin thread at the desired tension. If it is too loose or too tight the thread can't be pulled from the bobbin. (It's easy to strip the threads of the case, so be very careful.)

This is easiest to check on other types of sewing machines with a vertical bobbin case. For those, you remove the bobbin case and thread the bobbin through it correctly. Dangle the bobbin case from the thread (carefully). The bobbin case shouldn't slide on the thread but you should be able to pull out more thread if you hold the center of the bobbin and bobbin case. (Hold gently so that the bobbin turns.)

Next the bobbin race and hook need to grab the bobbin thread and twist it with the top thread. If these are damaged (perhaps by a bent needle), they won't work properly. These are at the back of the bobbin case.

Try replacing the bobbin case or parts of the bobbin case as needed. The Singer 947 is in the same line as the 244 and should use those parts. http://parts.singerco.com/CPpartCharts/2_2999/240_SERIES.pdf has the parts list. Try contacting a Singer dealer to get the parts. Unfortunately, my usual vendors only seem to list the manual as an available part for this line.

I hope this helps.

I AM HAVING TROUBLE WITH THE TENSION ON MY BERNINA 153 AND IDEAS?

Lots of possible issues, but first, check your bobbin case. Take the bobbin out and clean around the inside with a cotton bud. Replace the bobbin and hold the thread and let the bobbin/bobbin case dangle free (take care that the bobbin doesn't slip out of the case. The bobbin case should stay stationery. If you **** the thread upwards , the bobbin should unwaind (this is a very very rough guide). If the bobbin unwinds when just holding the thread stationery, screw in the tension screw on the side of the case a fraction until it doesn't. Conversely if it doesn't unwind when jerked, try unscrewing it slightly. The adjustment is fairly critical and should really be done with a proper gauge and weights. If the bobbin tension is OK, are you sure you're threading the top thread properly ... you should always thread through the pre-tensioner, tension discs and takeup arm with the presser foot lifted - this ensures the thread will lay down between the tension discs properly. Put the presser foot down only when you're threading the needle. If the top tension is too high, try cleaning the tension discs - you can do this fairly simply by turning the tension down to 1, or 2 and with the presser foot up, thread some thick wool through the pre-tensioner and tension discs. Drop the presser foot and drag the wool through slowly - this should clean the fluff and muck out of the discs. Failing the above, you may have a problem elsewhere, such as the check spring or maybe even a problem with the hook/shuttle. In this case, you'd be best to have it checked-out professionally. By the way ... when did you last have your machine serviced ???!!! Also, when did you last remove the hook/shuttle, clean round the hook race firmly with a cotton bud and re-oil it ? You may find the latter will cure your problems ! Good luck and get back to me if I can be of any further help.

Do you have a manual for this machine? You need to follow the cleaning instructions and remove the needle plate, and clean under the bobbin holder. I've attached an image from my Janoma 6500 manual, I think yours has a top loading bobbin inside a magnetic bobbin case so this info should work for your model. There may be a little triangular shaped tool in your kit but any short flat blade screwdriver will remove the two setscrews. (always good idea to unscrew off the pressure foot and take out the needle first so you've got room to work).

PLEASE NOTE: If you've never pulled this bobbin area apart before, good idea to snap pics with your digital camera as you go to refer to and for reference next time!!

This uncovers the bobbin holder area, you'll see there is a black plastic holder which your bobbin goes into which has the tension device on the side and this then sits inside an outer metal casing which is the hook race. The bobbin holder is held there by a magnet underneath it and sits up against another little stopper. Look at the bobbin case and the stopper, there should be two red marks that must line up. Are they???

If the answer is no, then you need to remove the bobbin case, clean out any lint and fluff using your little brush that came with the machine, and you may also have pieces of thread caught in here too. Once clean, place the bobbin case back into the outer surround, under the other piece and lining up the two red marks. This is where photos are so helpful.

Now replace the needle plate and screws, pressure foot, pop in a new needle and thread everything up again.

If the thread continues to catch then you may have managed to damage the bobbin case; as they are plastic if they move out of position the needle can catch and burr or pierce them. If this has happened you could try to smooth out the burring with an emery board or similar. Or you may need to replace it if damaged badly. I've changed mine twice so far because I've pierced it with the needle several times.
I hope that this helps you out, good luck with your machine.tally_girl_3.jpg

I took out parts of bobbin to clean and when put them back the needle hits the metal of the bobbin case and i cant sew. it doesnt seem to be properly aligned.

Perhaps remove the bobbin case and check that you have put it back correctly. Check with the sewing machine manual to see how it is done correctly. Make sure that the top of the bobbin case is at the top of the bobbin case holder and make sure you change the needle as it will probably be dull or bent from hitting the metal of the bobbin case.

Missed stitches noise when it happens

Firstly, turn machine off then turn back on. Change needle. Re-thread the top and bobbin threads. Make sure you have not set the machine for a sideways stitch but you have been using a single stitch foot (recipe for Disaster!). BEFORE trying to sew, wind the machine by hand through a stitch or two (take the thread out of the needle's eye first) and look closely to see if the needle is in fact hitting something. If it is, then the needle needs re-centering and you will have to take the machine for repair to get this done.
Make sure the top thread is going into the tension disks. The presser foot MUST be up while you are threading. Hold onto the thread just as it comes off the spool and when you get down to the needle give a tug to be sure the thread is seated in the tensions before threading the needle. When you insert the bobbin, be sure the thread "clicks" into the tension slot on the bobbin case. Check the Sewing Advisor to be sure you are set for the correct fabric and stitch for what you are sewing. Have you cleaned out the bobbin area? Remove the clear or smoke bobbin cover, either use the tool provided or just press down firmly and slide forwards the metal feed dog cover (feed dogs down first), lift out the light grey plastic bit that half covers the bobbin case, remove bobbin case. Use the brush and clean out all the fluff from the bobbin area. Then check the bobbin case and clean it too. You can use a piece of strong thread or UNWAXED dental floss to clean out between the tension springs (the bit where the bobbin thread 'clicks' into). Reassemble the bobbin pieces in reverse order, making sure that when you replace the metal feed dog cover you push it all the way to the back and it too will 'click' into place. Hope something in the above works for you.

Black bobbin case

If this is the machine I think it is the bobbin case is completely round as opposed to half round. If it is half round ignore the following.
Remove the presser foot and then the two screws which hold the needle plate. Lift off the needle plate and then lift out the old bobbin case. Clean all the lint out and then insert the bobbin case so that the less round part of it is to the back and the lip around the bobbin case is resting on the lip around the hook. Turn the hand wheel a few times to be sure it is working smoothly and not binding. Replace the Needle plate , bobbin and presser foot. Insert a new needle, thread the machine, Check your tension to be sure it is working correctly, turn the hand wheel again to be sure it is picking up the thread without binding and sew.
