dude, I almost gave up.. try this link. Apparently lots of people experienced this problem so HP gave an extended warranty for models like these.

There is a Limited Enhancement Program that includes this model. If you are in the US call 1-800-474-6836. If you are outside US check the HP.com website and search for the Limited warranty enhancement Program.
This is normally a video chipset issue that is embedded in your MB. If your notebook is part of the program, hp will shoulder the repair cost for the MB replacement.

Pressing the f8 key doesn't work either? This should boot the laptop to safe mode, if it doesn't then check the memory cards before you do anything else, try to get somebody with the same type of memory card to lend it to you. If that doesn't work, then your HDD is corrupted, and to re-install Windows.

1) First check the Display to make sure this isn't the problem.
Laptop on shine a flashlight at the LCD screen, and various angles.
Do you see faint images?
Do you have a VGA monitor available? (Also referred to as a CRT. Resembles a small TV)
If so, laptop off plug the VGA monitor into the VGA connector on the Left side of the laptop.
(Typical VGA connector,
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:SVGA_port.jpg )
Turn the VGA monitor on, and let it power up. Once the VGA monitor is powered up turn the laptop on.
Is there a display on the VGA monitor?
If not press and hold down on the Fn key, then tap the F4 key.
This action should toggle your display over to an external monitor.
Yes? You have a display on the external (VGA) monitor?
Then you have a problem with the Backlight, or the Inverter.
An LCD screen cannot produce enough light by itself. It needs an additional light source.
A Backlight is used as an additional light source.
A Backlight is a CCFL.
Cold Cathode Fluorescent Lamp.
Similar to Fluorescent lighting used in homes, and businesses, but on a MUCH smaller scale.
(Typical size is 3 to 5 inches long, and half the diameter of a No.2 pencil.
A Backlight is located within the metal framework holding the LCD layers together, and is on one edge of those layers. {An LCD screen is composed of layers)
An Inverter is used to provide power from the laptop for the LCD screen, and the Backlight.
90 percent of the time the problem is the Inverter.
An Inverter is a small circuit board located within the Display Assembly. Behind the Bezel of the Display Assembly, and located usually at the bottom of the LCD screen.
(The Bezel is the thin plastic frame that surrounds the LCD screen in the front)
Typical example of an Inverter for an HP Compaq 6735S,
http://www.impactcomputers.com/494116-001.html
The Display Assembly needs to be removed from the laptop, in order to remove the Bezel, and gain access to the Inverter.
Pictorial guide of how to remove the Display Assembly,

Follow Steps 1 through 7.
This pictorial guide shows how to remove the Bezel. The guide is for replacing a webcam module.

2) If NO display is shown on the external monitor you have a graphic chipset problem.
This requires replacement of the motherboard.
Chip and Chipset are slang terms to mean I.C.
Integrated Circuit.
The graphics chip is mounted to the motherboard with a BGA surface mount. (Ball Grid Array)
Having the chip removed and replaced is more expensive than replacing the motherboard.
