My 2002 Pontaic SE 3.1L has stopped working. While driving the other night the lights became very dim and the battery light came on. Eventually the ligths faded as I made it to my drive way. As the lights were fading the car began to sputter. It never cut off but when I tried to restart it and it appeared that the battery was dead. I thought that it was the alternator and I changed it. It appeared to be running fine and suddenly it did the same thing again. Any idea what it could be?

Could still be the alternator. I've had replacements go bad in days. You can have the alternator tested for free at most auto parts places.

SOURCE: while driving the radio faded out, lights going

Yes I believe you hit the nail on the head. While investigating your alternator take a good look at battery and cable connections too. But my two cents says you have your answer at the alternator.
I hope this may have helped,
Tom

SOURCE: i changed the battery and the alternator and my lights went out and the car shut off

Check your fusible links leaving the positive battery cable, wires could be burnt or swollen.just check all wires coming from positive side of battery. Also check all fuses in fuse box.

SOURCE: car dies when driving at night

Here is a tip check to see if all ur contacts are clean and making a proper connection I once had a problem with a car that was doing the same thing i bout a new alternator drove it around and battery died on me battery was good so i took it to auto zone and they did a battery inspecting which includes the alternator being checked it turned out that the new alternator was not good
Another tip check ur alternator wire harnest it might not b locked into position sometimes the clip that locks the harnest in place breaks and if u think that just by connecting it It will work fine any bump on the road will cause ur harnest to move or not make contact

The battery light comes on and eventually the car shuts down

When the battery light is on the alternator is not charging. whith no charge going in there is a drain on the battery and eventually the battery voltage is too low to work the cpu and coils so the engine stops. Check for condition of drive belt and retension if necessary. Have the alternator check for charging

Assuming you have checked all fuses, the next step would be to locate central grounding points (there may be several) and remove and clean battery terminals and the remote ends of the cables at their attachment points.Locating some of these may be easier with a manual covering the electrical system of the car:
Sebring manual
When removing battery cables, always start with the negative cable first and reattaching it last.

Hi, your alternator has likely packed up. Recommend you remove the alternator and have it tested at a parts chain. If you need instructions, please let me know.

While driving @ nigh, lights dimmed, and eventually engine died. It was previously having startup problems. New starter installed before above problem occurred.

Dim lights while driving means your car is running off the battery and the alternator is shot, which is why it's hard to start and the lights go dim, you drain the battery while driving and the alternator is not charging it back up.

The sideview mirror lights and windows have

I am pretty sure it is the body control module. My 02 sable is currently having a similar issue. On a random day my girlfriend took the car to the store, the car started honking when she went to re-enter the vehicle. never done that before. Later that night the left front turn signal will not shut off. the turn signal light on the dash stays on solid, this morning the bright light indicator was on solid and the turn signals worked perfectly fine until the blinker light eventually went back to on all the time. I disconnect the battery at night or if I am not going to drive it for a few hours. But I am 99% certain it is the BCM causing this.

Dim dashboard lights and problem starting

Could be a loose or dirty battery connection, poor battery, or alternator. Check all the cables and connections to your starter. Clean your battery posts. Have your alternator and battery checked. It sounds like you are either running off just the battery or just the alternator. One of them is not right.

2002 Impala, headlights work however they blink

This may be the start of a worse problem that the Impala eventually developes. The Body Control Module has a design flaw along with the Passlock anti-theft system. You may get away with just replacing the BCM for now. It needs to be reprogrammed at the dealer and the car will not start if you replace the BCM without reprogramming it. I would also recommend against replacing it with a remanufactured one. Repair cost is going to be around $500 at the dealer.

If the Passlock system is also at fault, add another $500 for a new ignition switch and cylinder. If you haven't experienced random starting problems yet, they are coming soon. When you turn the key, nothing happens. I thought my 2002 Impala may have been immune to these problems that I've heard about constantly, however, at 90,000 miles, it became "possessed". The symptoms started slowly and got worse. Beside the interior lights flashing like strobs in the middle of the night (while the car was not running), the headlights would occasionally click off and on a few times while I was driving at night.

The relay switch you hear clicking is the Battery Rundown Protection relay. I'm suprised your battery hasn't drained to the point where the car will not start in the morning.
