Sounds like you have a very weak battery. It would be beneficial to charge the battery for some time before trying to jump it. You could also take the battery to a Auto Parts store and have them check it. If it is bad, then bring a new one home, and try it then.

If your battery is too weak, sometimes you cannot jump the car.

Let me know how what you figure out, and I can provide further help.

Dare, Turn the key to the run position and shift the car to neutral. Turn the key to the start position and see if it will start.
There have been problems with the park/neutral switches that can cause this type of problem. If it still wont start, we will proceed to the next step.

If the problem occurs after the car has been driven long enough to reach normal operating temperature, the problem is the starter. If the 'no crank' occurs cold, retest the battery.

I have a 98 Saturn SL1 from time to time it would not start, it wouldn't even try. I knew the battery was good. It turned out to be the cranshaft position sensor.

SOURCE: 1999 saturn base model starting problem. Turn the

The battery and charging subsystem consists of a battery and a generator with a built in regulator and integral fluid intrusion shield. The system also includes the Powertrain Control Module (PCM ) software to increase idle speed during low voltage conditions. The battery supplies current to the starter to crank the engine during starting. After the engine starts, the charging system recharges the battery and supplies power to various electrical devices in the vehicle. The PCM monitors battery voltage and will increase idle speed if battery voltage drops below a calibrated amount.
With that said Batteries usually last three years so if yours is older then that then it could be time, also a weak charging system will kill a battery really fast. I recommend that you take the battery to local Napa or Autozone and have the battery tested if it comes back no good replace then after you get it running take to car somewhere to confirm your charging system is in proper running order usually some parts stores can test that also.

Hope this helps

MY SATURN 2002 SL1 WILL NOT START. MY BATTERY IS FINE BECAUSE ALL LIGHTS AND RADIO WORKS BUT WHEN I TRY TO START IT, IT MAKES A CLICKING SOUND.

A quick check, is turn your headlights on, try to start, if lights dim almost to off, bad battery, if they don't dim, it's a bad starter assembly.

1995 saturn sl1 not starting. the battery is fine its just when i try to turn it over to start the car i dont hear any sign that the car is trying to start.

I had issues with my 1999 doing similar problems. Ended up having "burning and arching" with the fusebox and replaced it. In addition to not starting various electrical components wouldn't work like radio, rear defrost, remote control keyless entry...

"Service Engine Soon" warning light

The "service engine" light come on in about 80% of older cars quite frequently. Usually, it means nothing being related to some emissions component or similar. You can shut it of with a rented (for free,) tool at Autozone. The tool is a code-reader, and can also tell you what the specific cause is, as well as instruct the on-board computer to simply turn off the annoying light. Odds are it'll come back if you don't fix whatever trivial B.S. it is complaining about. Best advice: Unless it's something major, just live with it like everyone else. - Good Luck, John

If the starter motor will not crank the engine over first check the battery to see if it is fully charged. A volt meter across the battery should read at least 12.6V. If you do not have a volt meter, turn the ignition key on and check the rate of the turn signal operation and check that the headlight high beams are bright as normal. If the rate of turn signal flashing and headlights are normal, chances are the battery is charged and the problem is else where.

If TS and HD Lights are not normal, fully charge the battery. Then with the head lights on try to start the car. If the head lights dimm or go out, you have a bad connection in the wiring going to the starter motor or a bad battery. Clean the battery terminals and try again. If NG, have the battery load tested.

If after charging the battery and the car starts normally, the question becomes, does the battery run down because of a draw in the system or because the alternator does not charge the battery while driving. You can take to car, it is now running right? To any number of auto parts stores and they will check the battery and charging system for you in the hopes of selling parts.

If the battery and alternator check out, the battery is most likely being depleted over time by some accessory in the car pulling power when it should not be. This can be quickly checked by putting an amp meter in series with one of the batter terminals. It will show the rate of draw in AMPS that is the problem. Finding that problem is a process of elimination ( say by pulling fuses) until the problem goes away then examining the circuit that the problem occurred in. Most times it is the interior lights.

Good Luck!

if you have good battery voltage at this time, and when you banged on the starter and then the car cranked over, it would appear you have a defective starter. i would imagine if you replaced it in july of last year that it could still be under some sort of warranty, so i would look into that. either way, it sounds as if you need a new starter.
