The fuel system is self priming, hold the gas pedal to the floor while cranking.

The pre-heat relay is under the bumper and behind the lead light on the left side.

4 possible answers 1, pollon filter 2,exlorator peddle, 3 fuel module
4,fuel pressure rail , have you had it pluged in for faults

Have a load test done on the battery as the glo-plugs should get very hot very quickly. Diesel engines have to have a high rpm crank speed or they will not start and will leave unburnt fuel in the cylinders ( wet glo- plugs). Every indication is that the battery is flat or is not the right capacity for the car.

Fuel Pump is overheating and Stalling

It is hydraulic. Are you engaging 2nd gear prior to reverse to slow gear motion and ease reverse effort? Is the engine idle speed with specs?

have you tried the glow plug relay? or if you have a test light see if theres power to glow plugs when light is on,should only light for 5 or so seconds.some of the newer hdi dont even use the glow plugs till temp is very cold,i have a 2006 2.0 hdi van and glow plug light only stays on for a second or so,and its been like that from new! is the problem just bad starting? and is it only when its cold? if you have a manual priming pump for fuel under bonnet,trying pumping before starting it could be fuel prob?ie air getting into fuel system
