The washer "dogs" are worn out. they are what agitate the tub. need a repairman. He may be able to replace them for 20 bucks plus visit fee if he has some used ones on hand.

SOURCE: washing machine

This may be a little late, but it may assist someone else. On my Kleenmaid top loader I found the agitator has clips at the bottom of agitator that clip over a drive hub at the bottom of the "tub" . All you have to do is gently prise it up using your fingers between the bottom of the agitator and the bottom of the tub.

Agitator on GE topload dual action moving in one direction

The Agitator In your washer has two parts. The bottom half will move back and forth. The top half (spindle) will move in one direction (clockwise). Most of the scrubbing or washing is done by the bottom half of the agitator. The spindle is responsible for pulling the clothes down from the center and sending them to the bottom where they will be scrubbed. As the clothes circulate, they will all be washed.

Hw to get fabric unstuck from bottom of agitator on a GE Gtwn2800Doww topload washer

Some agitators at the top have a plastic lid that has a bolt under it holding the agitator in washer. Take the bolt out and agitator should come out of washer.

Simpson Eziset550 cannot remove the agitator after removing the bolt in the centre.

try bumping the agitator side ways with your hand in several places then lift out. It is on a course spline and may take a bit of effort at first.

Washing machine won't agitate.

Depending on type of washer, typical top load Maytag, motor turns in opposite direction for wash and spin. Your problem will no doubt be the transmission.
