Problem for Gateway PC Desktops

Generic problem for all Gateway PC Desktops

Lost computer password, screen black, say...

Gateway computer Model, 0015044150

It is a friend's and he cannot remember the password and is unable to get it from person whom sold him the computer. I do not know the age of computer but it says it has Windows 98 in it. Any help would be appreciated. He has discs labeled Gateway System Restoration CD version. He has used the computer since he bought it with the password witch the other person used and then he entered a second password dwire 99. Thanks for any help. Jackie Lovald

- I put in the restoration disc, I can hear the processor working but the screen still shows up "enter current password". Any other ideas? Jackie

- I tried putting in the restoration disc but cannot see a difference. I tried the other keys as holding ctrl, tab, F2, F8, still do not see how to get rid of "enter password", any other ideas? Jackie

- It is a completely black screen with just the one line like this:

Enter CURRENT Password:

I cannot make a black box like you did. If we try anything like he remembers the password to be, than an X appears at the end. Jackie

- Thank you, this sounded like it would work. What happened is my friend decided to leave and packed last night before we could try this. I wrote it out for him and hope he will find someone where he lives to try that for him. I wish I knew too if it worked, I think it will. Thank you very much for your good help and courtesy. - Ekse, in regards to the above messages about the password, my friend called and had removed the battery, and indeed that password line was gone, and they have been able to use the computer. So thank you for that very good idea. jackie L

hi simply put in the "Gateway System Restoration CD version" this will reinstall the operating system clean install and remove any user names and passwords.

is this a password that comes up instantly when the power is turned on? If so, this can be removed. theres a 3 volt memory battery on the mainboard, you can remove this battery and unplug the computer for a hour, that should get rid of the password if not. Then I will need to look into it more and see where the password reset switch is on the mainboard.
