Try "packing" it like a deck of cards or a pack of ciggs. this will cause it to resync itself with the lens.

you might have to send it in for repair if the lens circuit is off.

E10 and s45 same problem

the batteries needed for the cameras are quite high powered

though the batteries show that they are fuly charged most times they have lost their actual capacity of power storage in them so not being able to supply enough to start the camera best way to test this is to start the camera on preview mode if this works then you will need to buy a new set of rechargable batteries, i would suggest to take batteries in the range of 2000MAh to 2500MAh and

the normal batteries will not be able to sustain long even for normal lens open and retract functions, instead of normal batteries try LR6 varieties (eg: Duracell, Energizer, etc)

My pentax m20 optio wont turn on.. it says battery deplete..

Hi there - these are older posts, but I just experienced this problem (it appears to be pretty common). The fix I discovered (that works), is to insert your batteries (make sure they're fresh), and then press and hold the "on" button plus "Menu" button, together at the same time. Hold until the firmware resets (a message will pop up on screen and the camera will reset). Voila! It works again for as long as the batteries are in and operational. Also note that in my case, if the batteries are taken out, I have to go thru the reset process again, but at least I have the camera back up and running. Hope this helps others!!

Switching off as if battery is depleted when the battery is newly charged

I called Pentax and they said it's a known problem and the lens needs to be re-synchronized. They said this is usually caused by dust in the lens.

I have to send the camera to : -
Pentax U.K. Limited
Pentax House
Heron Drive
Langley
Slough
SL3 8P

It's a free repair if you bought the camera less than a year ago o/w they will send you a quote for the repair.

Dead?

Have exactly the same prob, my camera worked for 3 years without any probs, except that the alkaline batteries didn't have a long life...tried rechargeable batteries as well, but since three weeks ago it simply says, "batteries depleted", nothing works, tried everything...sending it to Pentax after the warranty is over is far more expensive than buying a new cam...really sorry for that, but don't think I gonna buy a new Pentax again...

Depleted Batteries

Clean the contacts in the battery chamber to get to the bottom of the chamber use an eraser on the end of a pencil Also the top contacts. you could also try packing out the contacts on the tops of the batteries to ensure good contact.

Can't get my camera to turn on

Try rechargable batteries or Duracell. Other batteries may not have sufficient charge.

Optio S40 Battery issues

I've had this problem. The S40 is *really* picky about good connections for the contacts to the batteries. Make sure you use a facial tissue or something similar to wipe off the ends of the batteries to take off as much finger oil or what have you. Then when the batteries are inserted into the camera, spin them around a couple of times to ensure that contacts have a good connection then wipe the tops of the batteries again and close the battery cover. I've had the same problem with NiMH batteries that I've had no problems with *ever* in other digital cameras and game boys. It probably has something to do with the small prongs that pentax uses on the battery contacts.

Shutter lens won't go in

If I remember right it takes AA batteries. Correct? Perhaps one of your NiMH AA's is not charged properly. Try it again with two newly charged NiMH batteries. You might also try putting in two newly charged batteries and let it sit for 24 hours and then turn it on. Lastly you might try putting a little pressure on the lens when you turn the power on. I had to do this once with my Optio S4. Hope you can get it figured out.

Shutter problem

I have an Optio 330 too. Have had it since Feb 2002 (second owner) and taken over 5000 shots. I experienced something similar earlier this year: when i pressed the "on" button, the lens would extend, then there would be a jarring noise, the lens retracts, and the camera switches off. The camera couldnt work at all. I almost sent it in for servicing after a few days. However, I gave its base a firm bang squarely onto a thick floor rug. That solved it! The problem recurred one month later, i did the same thing, and it solved the problem again. Overall, the Optio is quite hardy, though it can get cranky with age. Hope it works for you.
