Definitely a issue with the gauge, or the wiring for the gauge. Sounds like a "dead"short. If the gauge is reading over full, that's indicative of a short.

SOURCE: filling gas tank

There is a vent pipe that runs along the fill pipe, they get kinked and cause this concern (tank can't vent air when filling), the only fix is to replace the fill pipe assembly.

SOURCE: fuel gauge not working on 2005 ford mustang

Sending unit is in gas tank. usually as an assembly with the electric pump. These aren't cheap either, If you know a mechanic you can trust ask him how much to install a new one, I can get them wholesale for less than two hundred dollars, but of course retail probably more like 250.00 Hope this helps you!

SOURCE: Gas Gauge not reading correctly

The most likely culprit is the sending unit in the tank. They are relatively easy to change, as long as you don't have much fuel in the tank. It's a mechanical unit that has a float that raises and lowers with the fuel level, however with age, the floats can develop leaks and no longer float, of the electronic portion of the unit can go bad and not register the proper level. They are replaced and an entire unit, so it doesn't matter which happened, you will need to change the fuel tank sending unit.

Guage replaced. Fuel sender checked and working fine. guage reads empty all the time.

Check the anti slosh module in the instrument cluster. It could be that or the gauge. If there was an open it would read past full.

98 ford ranger fuel gauge not working

The float on the sending unit could be jammed of your have a short in the harness.

Check the harness first and pay attention to the connections, if there ok then it's the float on the sending unit on the gas tank.

Sorry for the bad news but it make start to work again any time if it is the float.

Good luck, and hope this helps
