Blurred vision on Monitor (unable to cha...

Today I purchased a Fujitsu E19W-10 monitor and was told that all I had to do was plug it in and it would work. I got the screen working but all the words are blurred and the definition/resolution is very poor. A message came up and told me to change to 1440 x 900 and when I did my screen wouldn't fit (the X in the top right hand corner had gone off the screen completely and the status bar etc had disappeared). The current settings on my machine are 1024 x768 pixels, 32 colour quality and 60 Hertz. Please can you tell me how to fix this problem, Or is the monitor not compatible with my PC which has Windows XP on it. Also, the manual I received with the monitor is not very helpful. Thanks
