You must take a lot of flash shots. Try using Energizer Ultimate Lithium Batteries. They cost more but they last up to eight times longer. They're 1/3 lighter and they don't discharge while they're just sitting there like other batteries do.

I recently acquired a Canon Powershot A590is that was DOA and wouldn't power on. None of the obvious things like quality fresh batteries or dirty battery contacts were the solution. I decided to disassemble it with the help of a webpage with very good instructions regarding the procedure. When I got the case apart I got my volt meter out and took a few readings with the batteries in and noticed that I could access the micro switch through a small opening in the back. I took my probe and pushed up on the slider and the camera came to life. So I mechanically actuated the micro switch so it is closed all of the time and the camera functions perfectly. My question to the group is whether anyone knows what the exact function of this micro switch is and if there could be any long term damage done by "over-riding" its function? When the battery cover is opened the batteries are out of the circuit anyway and as long as the camera is powered off before opening or closing the cover I can't see where there could be a problem. Thanks in advance and my appologies for the long winded post! Bob
