Press and hold down the power button for approx 20 seconds until you hear the tomtom 'drums' then release and wait a couple on minutes

If you are using Trend Micro virus software change the Firewall profile ot HOME NETWORK. I was helping my friend today with the same problem and after I changed the profile the FREE update worked.

I just purchased a TOMTOM Via 1605 and cannot download the updated maps. My computer recognizes my TomTom but for some reason I cannot make room for the upgrade

You might have to add a mini sim card. if there is a slot for it.
