I have a Whirlpool refigerator model ED5THA that has quit cooling. The blower fan still operates and the lights come on but it does not cool. The problem just began yesterday. I think it is probably the compressor. What are your thoughts and how much do you think the repair would be. It is only 5 years old. orthoman4
It's likely the start device on the compressor. If you hear clicking sound every few minutes - that's likely it. Turn off the fridge, remove the start device from the compressor and shake it - if small pieces looking like sand start falling out, replace the start device. Part number is on the device itself.

A while ago, our freezer fan conked out on us. We had a techie replace it, at it worked fine. But then three months after it had been replaced, it started to grind and heave and whirr in a loud, annoying way. And for the longest time it has continued to do that. At times it runs smoothly, but it never lasts long, and it goes back to grinding. My dad thinks it is due to the fan in the back of our freezer getting clogged with a build up of ice, but in any case, we don't know how to stop it.
