When I turn on my computer I get a grey screen for a few minutes until a blinking folder with a question mark in it appears. Often, my computer shuts off after the question mark folder disappears. I have read that booting from a disk is how to fix this problem, but I am unable to do it. I've never tried before, but I have been unsuccessful. Any ideas?

The blinking question mark means that you macintosh can't find a bootable disk. It has nothing to do with the VGA connection. More than likely, your directory structure on the disk is bad. An excellent product to fix this is Disk Warrior. It has saved more hard drives for me than I care to think about. Worth every penny.
As far as booting up from a disk, just put in the CD and hold down the C key until you see the spinning icon.
You could also try these to things if you don't want to purchase disk warrior, but I don't think they will work. Hold down the shift key while you boot until you see the apple logo. The shift key is to boot it in safeboot mode. Or, you could also reset the pram:

  1. Shut down the computer.
  2. Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
  3. Turn on the computer.
  4. Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
  5. Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
  6. Release the keys.

Hi Joe. It means that the start-up drive has some corruption of some sort. I've posted previously what to do in such situations so just search for flashing question mark and there's a walkthrough of possible fixes.

Grey screen with a blinking folder and question mark

Two possible things are wrong either your hard drive has gone or your system has corrupted. Put your instal disk in start it up holding down the c key. Once it has started check that the hard drive exists by go to the menu bar and selecting the disk utility. If the hard drive shows it means that it is okay run the disk utility check drive and then run the repair permissions. Then try restarting, if it works then you are back up and running again. If the drive shows up and you restart and the same thing shows up with the grey screen, you will need to reinstal your system. You do this by starting up with the instal disk holding down the c key and run the instal script. To keep your hard drive contents your will need to use the preserve users instal.

If your hard drive does not show up the hard drive is probably a gonner and you will have to purchase a new hard drive and instal a fresh system.

Hope this helps

My powerbook G4 will not startup... All that appears on the screen when I try to turn on my computer is a tiny folder with a question mark on it. The mouse pad is nonresponsive.

Computer cannot find operating system files. Start up from Install Disk or Utility disk and re-install system. Hold down C key while starting from disk.

You can try to reboot the mac, hold the mouse button during 20 seconds to eject the CD, then insert you installation DVD (leopard). Reboot the Mac again, and hold the "C" key. Select english, the go to the tools menu, and Disk Utility. Go to the SOS tab, select your drive and click "repair". My computer would not charge. I have an appple powerbook g4. I bought a new battery. I put the battery in. It charges. Now the computr tries to turn on it makes the start up noises but the screen is blank....

Hi, sorry to hear you are having problems,
Are you saying that your Mac was working fine with the dead battery but then when you put in the new battery, the Mac died?
Well, if that is the case it might be possible that the battery ran down to ZERO and the mac's internal battery also is dead so, it does not even know what hard drive to boot into...
So, with the Mac Shut Down, hit the power on button and then VERY QUICKLY, press the ( alt ) key and hold it until you see a blue screen with a Big right pointing blue arrow and a circular arrow.
You can let go of the key, and the mac is now looking for suitable startup volumes to boot from...
You should see your harddive appear after a minute or so... If it does not appear, then either your system is damaged or your disk is KAPUT...
How old is your Mac? It is very very common for PowerBook drives to die after 4 years without advanced warning... :(
Good luck
