Letters sometimes won't work

I have a Dell computer and recently I have been having problems with my "s" and occasionally "a" and have had problems with "k" always small letters. If I keep pressing it sometimes it will start to work again, any ideas?

Re: letters sometimes won't work

I assume you have a desktop system with a plug in keyboard; if you have a laptop please tell me and I will type up instructions on how to clean the keyboard on laptops.
You might want to try cleaning out the keyboard.
Unplug the keyboard and hold it upside down; shake it gently and allow debris to fall (pressing the keys can help).
I would also either use compressed air or a small computer vacuum on the keyboard.
Let’s see if this working…if not we might need a through cleaning.

Hi vay_m0u8 ,

This is an indication that your keyboard is going to be out of order in some time.

All you need to do is to get the keyboard replaced if it's under warranty or follow the procedure below to check if it works.

  1. Open your keyboard , (Only if it's not under warranty) and then with a soft cloth clean the circuit present inside , you can use liquid like petrol for good cleaning.
  2. Once you have cleaned it , close your keyboard and then , check if it works fine.
  3. If the problem persists , either get a new keyboard , or get a replacement , if the keyboard is still under warranty.
Hope this helps ..:)

When i type a-key on the keyboard then a1 appears on the screen in Dell inspiron 1525 laptop, please assist me to get resolve this problem

Most likely you have your numlock key turned on by mistake. Look on your computer and see if there is a light with a padlock and a number in the padlock. It is probably lit up. Now look for a key on your keyboard called "numlock" and press the key once. See if the light goes off. When you have the numlock key on some of the letter keys will work as numbers like a calculator. When you turn it off the keys are back to letters.

Keyboard sometimes misses letters

If its always the same letter then it might have dirty contact.
In that case you can pop the cap off the key and check to see
if the contact is clean. Otherwise get another keyboard to see
if you have problems with that one. If the 2nd keyboard works
ok - then get a new keyboard - they are less than $10....

Dell keyboard does not allow me to type any letters. It is plugged in correct color on back of Dell computer.

Are you sure?
It should be in the purple connection
Assuming that you have done this correctly and you have restarted the computer (if you are using a PS/2 connector, it must be connected when the computer is off), then I would try a different keyboard.
If a different keyboard works, then you have solved the problem. If the problem persists, then you have a motherboard problem, in all probability.
But before swapping out components, see if you can start the computer in safe mode. If the computer starts then and the keyboard works, then you have a conflicting program running.

Dell inspiron 1525 keyboard letter a doesnt work

They sell replacement keyboards for this model on Ebay. However, from personal experience with another Dell model - sometimes the connecting cord gets pinched, and some keys go dead. On my laptop, grip it the wrong way and keys go dead. Grip it another way, and they work again. But opening it up and fastening the keyboard again, then screwing it back together also might work.

But whatever you do, check this page:
It has instructions for fixing a lot of problems on Dells, including replacing the keyboard on this one, and also replacing single keys.

Keys must be pressed repeatedly, mouse is jerky, websites zoom max.

Try reinstalling the software and get back to me. Also make sure there is no source of interference, like a strong electromagnetic field nearby (speakers, etc).

Dell Laptop - Keyboard "Fn" is causing problems!

I think it is not the Fn key but the NumLock that is activated. Look for the key labeled NumLk , this is the number lock. Also check if the light on the notbook with a number (usually number 1) is on. If it is on, yo must deactivate the numlock by pressing it again. It works in toggle mode. Sometimes the numlock is activated together with the shift key, sometimes with the function key.

Keyboard problems.

1. Restart the PC. 2. Hit F12 key repeatedly as soon as the PC turns ON. This will bring up the Boot Menu. 3. Select DELL Diagnostics. 4. Select the Complete / Full from the list of options. 5. Let the tests run which may take about an hour. Make sure you are there in front of the PC for the first 10-15 minutes, because it would need your inputs. 6. This will test the keyboard and USB ports too. 7. This will also verify for you whether the keyboard works when Windows hasn't started. 8. If all the tests pass and your keyboard is still working after sometime, you have issues with Windows: Start you computer in Safe Mode and check the USB drivers and the keyboard drivers. 9. Now, if you continue having issues even when you are running the diagnostics, you need to check your hardware viz. keyboard (try installing another keyboard if you have one) and the USB port. PLEASE REVERT BACK WITH THE RESULTS. I WOULD LOVE TO HELP YOU FURTHER ON THIS, IF THE ISSUE CONTINUES.
