On the home screen, tap and hold the book until a menu pops up, then select the delete option.

If you've already tried deleting the book on the kindle itself, have you tried plugging in the kindle (to your computer), navigating to the Documents folder inside and deleting the actual book file?

SOURCE: deleting a book on kindle

go to home tap on edit. then there will be minus symbols next to the names of the books. tap the minus symbol next to that particular book. now hit the done button. the done button should be located where the edit button was. now go to the book store, search for your book and now you can retrieve it.

How can I permanently delete a book from my Kindle
You can permanently delete them on the Amazon website, not from the Kindle itself.
I don't understand why you'd want to, as there is a huge amount of room in the cloud for more books than you could ever read in a lifetime.

How do i mark the books to show that they have been read
Hi,

Unfortunatelly Kindle does not have this feature. But the books you read get pushed down the list.
Or you can delete the book by using these steps:

1. Select a book and click the left arrow on the 5-way button that brings up a delete button the screen.
2. Press the center button and you delete the book.

Another option is to move the book to a collection this is like to archive the books you already read.
