My compaq presario x1000 screen is very very dark. i can see the image on it if i look closely. and when i press the rubbery button that controls the screen when the laptop is open or closed, the screen will flicker and light up for the moment i am pressing it. its very frustrating.
That rubbery nipple when its pressed in is what allows the screen to go into sleep mode. Sounds like it might be stuck halfway in between. Go ahead and try to take out the top cover with the rubbery nipple on it. See if the screen lights up like normal, if it does then you know the rubbery nipple is the problem and just needs to be readjusted so it doesn't get stuck.
If it still stays dim then its either the lcd or the inverter that is bad.

during the boot up process you will see on the screen for a short amount of time press a certain keyto enter set up Press and hold that key during the boot up process to enter BIOS scroll down to set user password or supervisor password you can change or remove your password from there
Do you have another screen attached? This will cause this trouble. If not, if you look closely at the screen, can you see an image? You might be able to shine a light into the screen and see an image. If so, sounds like the inverter is or has died. Try tapping the bottom plastic on the screen when the laptop is on and see if it flickers. If it does perhaps it is a loose connection/solder joint on the inverter board.
Sounds like the auto-dim in the BIOS is set too low. Fortunately the Compaq R3000 allows you to adjust the brightness right from the keyboard. Hold down the [FN] function key while tapping the [F8] key will brighten the screen, while [FN]-[F7] will dim it. The settings are different for running on AC power and battery, so you must do each individually.
Since u said that ur screen flashed and also u said that when u connected an external VGA nothing would display so from these two i can tell you that it is a hardware problem and that too with the VGA card/display card.
If you power it on, take a flashlight and shine it on the lcd at and angle and look real close to see if you can see a faint image. If you can, then your backlight in the screen is not working.
Also, you can attatch an external monitor to it, while its off, then power it on and see if it lights the external monitor. Try that and let me know your results.
If you get a picture ok on the external, and you can see a faint image on the lcd using a flashlight, then it could be the backlight inverter board or the bulb itself inside the lcd went out.
If you don't get any picture at all, using an external monitor and can't see a faint image on the lcd using a flashlight, then I would say there's other problems with the laptop itself. Could be a mainboard problem, power issue, etc..
