Horizontal Bright White Line in Middle of...

posted by jammer2552 on Nov 10, 2007

Here's what happened. I had just finished installing my webcam. I go downstairs for 3 or 4 minutes and I come back up. I see the screen is blacked out, because that is what my screen saver is. I move the mouse to close the screensaver, and I see this thin white line appear and slowly get brighter and brighter until I almost have to close my eyes. It's directly in the middle, and stretches from one side to the other, with approximately 10 pixels left on each side, of which is a less bright white line.

I have tried to bring the OSD menu up from the monitor and I can see the area where the menu usually comes up dim slightly. I have tried different outputs, so it is a monitor problem. I really hope that the monitor isn't screwed. Thanks in advance for those that are saying - DUH-ThisIs... and then nicely telling me.

About 2 days after I posted this, I went upstairs and moved my mouse, and the picture was actually back! I haven't turned it off since, I'm scared that it will mess up again. Btw - the screen image wasn't compressed - just replaced with pure white light.

I am having a similar issue with my NEC multisync FP912SB monitor. In my case the problem is intermittent, the line remains at the same level of brightness, and the osd, when activated, is compressed in that horizontal line as well. The problem is occurring more and more frequently. Banging on the sides of the monitor sometimes brings the picture back temporarily. I came across this. http://en.allexperts.com/q/Monitor-Problems-2115/Thin-horizontal-line-monitor.htm

It states that the problem is called vertical collapse and is caused by the failure of a couple of I.C.s in the monitor.

Hope that helps.
