Just replaced my Belkin G with a new Belkin N due to the fact that my wireless light would go on and off intermittently. The new router is doing the same and wireless light will NOT come on or stay on for more than 5 minutes - cannot hook up Vaio notebook
I had such a problem recently with a terrible time staying connected.
The problem was traced to poor channel selection. Even though I chose an unused channel, I picked channel 8. Apparently this is the absolute worst channel for interference from microwave ovens and cordless phones. Even though there was already someone using channel 11, the signal strength was only one bar. I switched to channel 11 and the problem went away.
I had done the same thing as you did, initially. I bought another wireless adapter only to find the same thing happening, which forced me to find the solution described.
here is just a suggestion, the modem you are using have its own transfer cable, connect it first, directly to your notebook LAN card.
connect to internet, if you can browse well then it is a good network connection., check also if there is still intermittent connection.
in this stage might be better to check what IP address of the notebook lancard you are using , and note it down.
assuming you have good wired connection, the next step would be connecting your router.
the set up would be modem to router to notebook
if you can browse again to the internet, it means you have a good network connection., now try to open the Belkin configuration utility might be, type in your browser 192.168.2.1, log on , check the wireless connection, and have your notebook IP address checked and unblocked.
to further check if you have successfully configured your wireless card, remove the wired connection, connect to the internet and browse again.
hope i have helped you, thanks for using Fixya!

I have 2 x xp computers. I am wanting to connect a vista platform aswell. In the properties, the drop down menu does not show WPA-PSK (no server) as a choice. This is what others are set at. Is there a patch to download from Microsoft to fix this problem?

I have just bought a Belkin N+ Wireless Modem-Router (model F5D8635-4 v1). It comes with a USB port in the back of the router. The back of the box says "you can connect any USB storage device to the N+ wireless modem router. Then you can easily share and access documents, videos, photos, and other files with multiple computers over a secure wirelss network, or simply back up files". I thought this was a great idea because it would allow we to create some networked storage without spending big on a NAS. The setup required is to install a program called "Belkin storage manager" on to each computer in the network that wishes to access the USB storage that is plugged into the modem router. Anyway the modem router and wireless all work perfectly. And with a USB 2GB flash drive drive plugged in all computers can easily access and write to the files on the USB drive which appears on the My Computer screen as a network drive. However, it just does not work with the WD My Book 1TB essential edition external USB hard drive I have. When the WD my book is plugged in to the modem router the USB storage LED on the front of the modem router remains unlit. The WD drive appears to be powered off - no hard drive spinning noise, no glowing blue light at the front. This drive works fine when plugged directly into any of my computers or my PS3. The WD My Book has not been formatted since it was bought, checking on its properties reveals it is in FAT32. I have only use XP Pro on my machines, and I have saved a PS3 back up on the drive. I believe the WD My Book 1 TB comes with a power saving function that causes it to automatically power down when your computer is switched off. I can only guess that when the WD my book is plugged into the modem router it decides that it is not connected to a working computer so it powers itself down. Is there anyway around this? Should I take my belkin modem router back to the shop and try the ASUS DSL-N13? Belkin level two tech support has basically shrugged their shoulders and said their device works with every known USB device and therefore its WD's problem. WD have said it was never meant to be a network drive so bad luck. Many thanks in advance for any thoughts. Also I'd be interested to know of peoples experiences using these USB storage sharing features on some of the newer routers.
I have exactly the same problem. In my case with a 750GB Trekstor stays unlit when connected to the N+ Belkin N+ Router with USB Storage does not work with USB Drive (Enclosure w/IDE), nor with Memory Stick (jump drive).
No interface or configuration settings allow for any form of diagnostics, et al.
Router find, USB Storage - non existent.
