my Dec 2004 WEGA KDF-50WE655 has purple spots and the picture is getting darker, I open the TV and used alcohol wipes to clean the projection mirror. the back of the viewing lens the wega engine glass and the lamp package. Sony support does not recommend a brighter bulb and that the problem is with the WEGA engine (the mirror system) at a cost of $800.00 to fix the purple spots but does not address the very dark picture.

I
know this isn't what you want to hear, but the problem you've described sounds like one of the circuit boards that control the picture quality needs to be replaced. The cost of the board would likely be in excess of $200. There are usually several boards in a TV like that that control the picture and when one goes, you can get anything from lines in the picture to poor picture quality from blurriness. The main question is do you want to spend $1000 to fix a used TV?
