My canon digial rebel will not work in AutoFocus mode

When my camera is in AF mode (the switch on the lens) it will not focus and it will not take any pictures. If I switch it to manual I can at least still take pictures, but obviously AF is much easier. I was not taking pictures at the time this started happening, so I don't know for sure if any buttons were pushed to make this happen.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to what may have caused this, or how I can go about getting it to work again?

have you tried removing the lense and then putting it back on, then turning on camara again?
