SOURCE: need help replacing solonid on mercury outboard
You may have enough room for a wrench. I have an old ignition set of small wrenches and those are slim. There is also a fitting called a crowsfoot which is thick like a wrench but short and fits on a rachet extension. The 1/4" drive set of sockets are usually shorter than 3/8th. If you have a camera, take pictures and go to Sears with it and buy something to work.

take out the whole starter,replace the solenoid and reinstall.
it is faster.
