Console freezes with hard drive in?

After i power on my X box the dashboard comes up like usual but about 2-3 seconds later it freezes. i called support and went thought the whole process. The x box does not freeze when my hard drive is removed. i was told to get a new hard drive and recover account. so i went to a friends house popped in the hard drive and it works fine just as it were in my box. The freeze happened right after i downloaded 1 vs 100. What do i do?
