i bought a computer from a friend, when she cleaned it up, i think she did something to the internet driver since this computer can't connect to the net. although the other computers in house can have access. it's a dell dimension

Are you wireless or wired. If wireless you have to set up your code to the router. if wired, go into the control panel and ck for your ether net card make sure it's installed, ck property for network settings, your ISP can help you get it set up for free.
