Question about Heating & Cooling

1 Answer

Ruud heat pump outside unit not starting. Open and found contactor disengaged even though I have system on from inside. Low voltage wires come out of a circuit board checked for 24v, none. Then bypassed board by unplugging same yellow and brown wires plugged into the board and exiting but now I have 24v getting to contactor but it does not engage contactor. What could the problem be. I know a little a/c but these heat pumps are very complicated. Help please, I want to learn.

If you are getting the low voltage to the relay and it is not closing, then the relay may be either bad or stuck. Disconnect the 220v and see if the contacts can be manually closed. I always use a piece of wood or something non-conductive. If the contacts will close manually, try re--energizing the circuit to see if the relay will now close on its own. If not, you are probably looking at having to replace the relay switch. I had to replace mine last year. As always, be extremely careful working around electrical boxes and capacitors.

Ruud AC unit outside won't start, furnace and blower inside work.

It sounds like your at the point where you need an electrical meter to check out the problem. Make sure you have the proper voltage to the outdoor unit. Could be a bad contactor in the outdoor unit

Outside unit runs continuously, even when system is off.

On A/C units, there is a low voltage line that leads to a contactor, which engages to close the high voltage circuit to the condensor unit. Over time, the accual contacts in the contactor can weld themselves together. Try shutting off your furnace breaker but leaving on the one for the outside condensor unit. If it still runs, your contactor probably needs replaced. Contact a licensed electrician or HVAC contractor and tell them you think your contactor is in need of replacement. Is a fairly simple and quick replace, but the contactor itself is not cheap.

I have a Ruud air-conditioner/heat pump and it blows 5 amp fuse.

It sounds like the thermostat wire going to the condenser is ground, It either got pulled loose and is touching the housing or as in most cases the wire got cut or was chewed by an animal. You need to turn electric off to both devices and physically inspect the thermostat wire going from the air handler to the outside unit, also inspect where they connect inside the unit. When you find the break, cut and strip each individual wire and securely wire nut each conducter red to red white to white and so on. There you go all fixed. That's when I give you the bill for $75...except this time you write that check to yourself. Good Luck

Ruud UAKB-018JAZ outside condensing unit will not run

Trace the wires (small cable) going to the out door unit. This is your 24v control circuit. when it enters the outdoor unit it ties to wires routing through the inside of the unit trace these down. For AC units 1 usually goes directly to the "contactor" (the item you push in and the unit runs?) the other wire can also go to the other side of this same item. But I suspect it goes through other tings before it finally gets there.
Some items are the high and low pressure switches and a delay timer.
A red button sticking out where you can reset it is the high pressure switch and if it clicks and lets it come on you may have a dirty outdoor coil or a fan motor outdoor that is not operating all time.
A low pressure switch has no reset normally on AC or HP.
A delay timer will have 2 3 or 4 wires depending on the type of timer. 1 of these wires goes to the contactor (usually) and one of them feed this wire. remove the wire going to the contactor. now 1 at a time take the other timer wires and touch them to the wire just removed. if the times is bad the contactor will click when you touch one of them with the removed wire.

If its a heat pump you will have to make the contactor try to come on around the board. and this you will need some knowledge on which and what feeds your contactor. Here Id suggest a technician. If I had a way to see your setup and wiring I could talk you through this but its too hard to type and would take way too long.

Heatpump A/C not working

First,Turn on the heat cycle (Not Emergency)and see if the outside unit come on,If not,and you don't have low voltage outside,Go to the inside unit and test the transformer,If you have low voltage from the transformer but not outside,It is the low voltage wires,If you don't have low voltage from the transformer,It's the transformer. If you have low voltage outside when in heat mode, but the unit won't come on,It's the contactor.Let me know if you need more help.

Please take time to rate this fixya

Blowing 3amp fuses

You have a low voltage short. A lot of low voltage shorts come from the wires that go out to the outdoor unit. Go outside and inspect those wires and that they are in good condition. Also check for any splices in those wires that they haven't degraded in any way. This is the only thing that will blow the fuse. That's why it's only 3 amps and based on the size of your fuse, it's a gas fired unit right? Have a great day!

Check to see if there's low voltage reaching the contactor's coil. If there is. and it doesn't close (pull in), then it's defective and should be replaced. Cut the power and check ohms to be certain.

Ruud heat pump outside unit trips circuit breaker

Check your wiring between the contactor and compressor for a short to ground, or check the compressor windings for short to ground.
With the Tstat off, the contactor should be open so the only way for the compressor to be trying to do anything is if the 110 volts from the unbroken side are traveling through the compressor to ground. Since 110v is not enough to run it, the overload is kicking it out, cooling off, and repeating the cycle. When you kick on the Tstat, the contactor is supplying voltage directly to ground without going through the resistence of the compressor windings and kicking the breaker.
Post back and let me know what you find.
