I have an old Shopmate 4" belt sander, model - Tools & Hardware - Others

I have an old Shopmate 4" belt sander, model 1503T0, that my dad gave me. I'm trying to replace the belt and I can't figure out how to release the tension. There is no obvious lever to pull in order to do so. Can someone help me?

If I am correct, when holding the tool in the normal operating position there should be an oblong cover on teh left hand side nea the back of the tool. It should be held on with a screw. remove this cover and you can access the belt . MAKE SURE THE TOOL IS UNPLUGGED. the belt should pull off/push on with a bit of force. Turning the pulleys as you put it on will help it go on evenly. If it is too stiff, put the belt in some boiling water for a minute or two to soften it up a bit.

SOURCE: The belt slips off my Belt Sander

All sander will have two adjustments. The first is to release the sanding belt by retracting the position of one of the rollers. The second adjustment moves one of the rollers belt tension from side to side. The roller angular position is changed, sometime by a single knob or screw, and sometimes by two separate adjusting screws.

There is a black metal ******** one side that is actually a lever and with the tip of a screw driver or the like, pops out and releases the front roller.

SOURCE: broken drive belt on belt sander

My answer comes almost a year after the original question, but I'll post it anyway for those who end up here after a search.
Black & Decker no longer supplies drive belts for the BR400 sander, but you can get a replacement elsewhere if you know what to ask for.
The belt is a synchronous, single-sided "XL" series belt, and mine had 120XL031 printed on it. The belt width is 0.31in or 5/16in or 7.9mm. Its pitch (distance from tooth to tooth) is 0.20in or 1/5in or 5mm. Its total height is 0.09in, and tooth height is 0.045in. It has 60 teeth, making the total length 12in.
I found a replacement at sdp-si.com, part number A 6R 3-060031.
Look here for timing belts (inch), then narrow the search for single-sided, .200 (XL) pitch, 60 grooves, 5/16 width.

I have a Black & Decker sander, model # 7447 and am having problems changing the sand paper.

The 7447 does not have a release lever. To change the belt, you must release tension of the rollers by pushing the front roller straight back until you hear it click and lock in position to change paper. Remove old paper and replace with new paper. Make sure if new paper has directional arrows to install properly.
Now you must release the front roller to put tension on paper. To do this push the front roller from the side that has the adjustment screw. This will release the front roller and allow it to go back into position. Be careful as it pops back quickly and with some force.
Turn on sander and adjust centering of paper with adjustment screw found near the front and side of sander.

I want to replace a broken drive belt for the Br300 Type 1 but am having problems. Please advise as to proceedure for replacing this belt. Thanks in advance for your help.

Look between the rollers that the sandpaper belt travel on. You will find a lever which can be released. Once you release it, you can pull the old belt off and slip the new belt on. Place the release lever back the way it was and you are done.

How do I release the lock on my Craftsman belt sander to lighten the belt. It's an old Model # 315.1172

I checked Searspartsdirect.com for that model number and they listed that number, but with an extra 0 at the right end. I couldn't find a belt release lever illustrated anywhere like that on my old Craftsman belt sander. On mine, you just flipped the lever either forward or back to release and tighten the belt. (still works great) There is a spring that pushes the front roller assembly forward when the lever is operated.
