Singer featherweight bobbin won't pick up needle thread

Hello, my 1937 singer featherweight will not pull the thread up from the bobbin. Can you tell me what to look for, do not have a book and haven't yet figured out how to take out bobbin case or even if it comes out. Help me please, it always runs so good, never had a problem with it.

Pull the bobbin case out by pulling tab or flapper forward (outward toward you) and take bobbin out of bobbin case, If bobbin has thread and that it is coming off bobbin free and is not hung up on bobbin case.
let me know if this helps you,

Needle will not pick up the bobbin thread.

Could the needle be inserted incorrectly? Typically, the flat of the needle shank goes to the back of the machine. Are the needles the correct type for your machine?

I see Singer Featherweight Featherlite manuals, not a Featherlite as a stand-alone model name. For the Featherweight 221 manual try here: and enter the model 221. Alternative site: with the direct link to the manual here: .

I hope this helps.

Bobbin thread won't come up with needle-featherweight

Try a new needle, remember needle flat side faces the rear of the machine and double check your threading.

Inserting needle on old singer machine

Hi Terry--

If your machine is 40-50 years old, it might be a Singer Featherweight portable. (If it is, you have one of the very best machines ever made!) On the Featherweights, the flat of the needle faces left (and the needle is threaded from right to left). The bobbin goes in a bobbin case; you'll see a small notch when you look down on the bobbin in the case. That's where the thread goes. I'll email you direct with more information.

Bobbin Thread won't come through

Thread the machine and the bobbin. Turn the handwheel towards you with your right hand and hold the the top thread in your left hand pulling slightly to the back of the machine. When the needle goes into the needle plate keep turning the handwheel untill the needle picks up the bottom thread and by pulling the top thread you shold be able to pull the botoom thread through the needle plate.

Practise makes perfect.

Feed Dogs, Thread Tangle

Hi Jeanette! You have a Singer Featherweight--the best sewing machine ever made! (Mine dates from 1950/51 and I wouldn't trade it for the world.) These beautiful, sturdy machines were designed to be easily repairable at home, but you'll need a copy of the Service Manual (get the Instruction manual too, if you don't have one.) Go to and check out what they have available.

I had a similar problem (needle thread not catching the bobbin thread) and the problem was that I hadn't put the needle in correctly (flat side to the left). Also, I will occasionally get thread wrapped around the bobbin housing--sewing along just great and then everything comes to a screeching halt. I'm not sure why that happens, but I'm getting pretty good at taking the bobbin housing apart. The manual is pretty clear on how to do it. You can contact me direct at for more information.
